Eskimo Press: Our senior editor speculates on the PlayStation 4 and goes over what Sony needs to get right in order for their new system to be a hit at launch.
There will be no fail... you can take that to the bank!!
Certainly hope that will be the case. Sony certainly have come a long way since the release of the PlayStation 3, and most of the issues that plagued the PS3 launch have been resolved... apart from the operating system. They need to get that right this time around.
OS is fine, if you can't find what you're looking for then I don't know what to tell you. The PS store on the other hand needs a change
1. Announce the system too early and then delay it. 2. Have the price too high. 3. No must have launch games. 4. Poor marketing. 5. Block used games or some other tactic that alienates the system from the rest. I think those are really the only bad things that could hold back the PS4. People may complain about no backwards compatibility or the specs not blowing us away or the dualshock being tweaked but those won't be huge issues. Sony is in good shape from what we saw from the PS3 leading into next generation.
@Minato. The operating system was grossly under developed. It's a heavy operating system that chews up a lot of ram. This is why they are unable to introduce Cross-Game chat. What Sony is currently doing to combat this is removing some of the integrated features like PlayStation Store, etc, and making them external. If you haven't noticed already, the PlayStation store is now a program that you downloaded, no longer integrated into the OS.
Their are none
We'll see. Vita seemed like a slam dunk leading up to it's launch.
Playstation fanboys, you will go on my 1st whistle, Xbox fanboys, you will go on my 2nd whistle.......
1. OS- The Operating System will be fine I'm sure. 2. Core Fans - To be honest it's not the core fans you need in order to succeed it is the causal, media consumption people. 3. BC- No BC isn't a must, it may be nice but far away from a must you buy a PS4 to play PS4 games not PS3 games yet I understand where people come from. Also, gaikai isn't BC, I hate seeing that if I have to pay for it, it's a solution not actual BC. 4. Price- Sony isn't stupid. I say $400 for the smaller HDD(320GB) and $450 for (500GB). They will be fine. 5. Launch Titles- Hmm this is an interesting one though. I can see some potential epicness with launch titles but you need third party to support you really. I'm not a fan of Killzone really because it's really just eye candy but Sony will bring it in the first party section, they need EA, Ubisoft, Activision, Take Two to come along and play. Unless the console explodes after use Sony will be fine. No fail here.
Its going to be a great time for Playstaion owners, there's not a single doubt in my mind. Just to see how they pulled out of a nose dive, just to end up ontop on every single noticeble level shows that Sony's game division is in a class of its own. Everybody who owns a playstation loves the shape that they are in, the same can't be said for the Xbox360.
I still believe the PS4 should have more than 4GB Ram. This gen proved that Sony skimping out on RAM hurt the PS3 in many ways including lack of RAM. They should go least 6-8 GB Ram to avoid future issues (even if using DDR5)...
The thing is about the RAM is how much of that ram will be used for the OS and keeping it running. The Wii-U uses 1GB and rumored Xbox uses 3GB. So if they use DDR5 then how much of that 4GB will be used for OS.
last rumor said Sony aims for PS4 to have 8GB RAM at the launch
I believe Digital Foundry have already stated that Sony's RAM choice for next-gen is superior to MS's... http://www.eurogamer.net/ar... 4GB DDR5 > 8GB DDR3 - It's in there somewhere.
8 GB DDR5 > 4 GB DDR 5
@dBoyman 9000Gb DDR99 > 8999.9Gb DDR99 No shiznit Sherlock
Not too heavy since we got to fly-em in, should run used games because there are no gamestores here, please keep it cool and quite because I don't want to melt the iglo or scare the seal and since we don't always have power, make it run on whalefat.
1. Too much focus on last gen titles with no new IPs 2. Slow operating system and outdated features and the way it works. They better not carry over the new ps store or YouTube app for example. 3. Price too high. Basic system can't launch above 299.99 4. Launches in 2013. I don't think Sony is ready for a 2013 launch, don't be like the Wiiu. Wait until 2014. 5. They don't counter Microsoft or keep up with them. Mictosoft owned Sony last gen with exclusive content and features.
I have to disagree with you 1. $299? Do you want another PS3 or just another Wii U? Man even the PS3 cost $299. 2. Microsoft owned sony with exclusive content? Sony owned microsoft with exclusive games, which I'm pretty sure anyone with a good common sense know that it is better to get new games than DLC 1 month earlier. 3. I think people misunderstand the fact that COD is not "everything", when people say "Xbox 360 get DLC first" they are only talking about COD as if it was every game out there... Sony gets exclusive content from Ubisoft ( Far cry etc) and EA (Battlefield etc) and even other Publishers out there like the ones that publish Mortal Kombat 4. I don't think that with the PS4's memory the PS store will struggle neirther Youtube app (pretty sure they will make better looking too) Facts
No new IPs? Who do you think we are talking about? Microsoft and Nintendo? Don't tell Sony not to focus on last gen titles.Tell them that that. The jump to make another Mario and Halo every second people.
PS4 is going to be the greatest console ever made without a shadow of a doubt.. Just like vita is the greatest handheld ever made.. Games, games, apps, games, & more games are all that needs to keep coming
