Why Next Gen Consoles Will Have Used Games

Kristen of Ghost Volta: "Quite a few rumors have recently circulated about the possibility of there being “no used games” on next gen consoles. Let me tell you why that’s not going to happen.

This is all based on what I know from working for GameStop for 2 years. If the industry developers are stupid enough to ignore these things (hint: they are not), then they’re going to fail miserably. Here’s why:" (GameStop, Industry)

Lots of wishful thinking in this article, and all four points are weak and/or wrong.

1. Okay, developers get their money when retailers order new units. Eliminate the used game market, and retailers have to order more new copies. More money for developers.

2. Manufacturing old games isn't a big deal, especially when they can be delivered digitally for literally zero marginal cost.

3. There are other retailers besides GameStop that can market games.

4. I agree that game distribution probably won't go all-digital next gen, but digital distribution picked up dramatically over the past couple of years and will continue to go mainstream when the next round of consoles hit. This doesn't have much to do with why developers want to stomp out the used market, but it does further undercut your second point about making old games available.

I hope Sony and Microsoft don't block used games, but if they don't it won't be for any of the reasons you cited. It'll just be plain old consumer demand.

People worry for nothing. There was a patent that had a technology that would block used games when the ps3/360/wii were about come out and nothing was done with it.

Nothing is gonna be done this time either.

Just because there is a patent, it doesn't mean anything will happen. In fact, most of the time, nothing happens.

Sony got a patent for a controller that gets cold or hot depending on the situation and nothing was done with this (nothing will ever be done with it as usual).

Don't believe in rumors. They're just there to cause ruckus.

Although this time, it's a good one, since Gamestop stock dropped. If it can annoys gamestop, I don't mind.
