Tomb Raider and The Last of Us are defining a new sub-genre of gaming

Josh Engen write: I'm not a fan of the genre splicing that happens in video games, music, and movies. Artists and publishers are often so desperate to create a genre-defining piece that the classifications themselves become entirely meaningless. We don't need musical genres like cuddlecore and cybergrind to classify anything, and the fact that I didn't make either of those genres up should sufficiently prove my point. (PC, PS3, The Last Of Us, Tomb Raider, Xbox 360)

better than having FPS almost all the time. just give me some adventure with some form of "survival" experience thrown to it, then I'm all in.

We need more games in this genres!! I hope Ps3 and Ps4 will have more adventure/survival games!!

I would be shocked if the new Tomb Raider defines anything. I sure as hell hope it gets better later, if that's the case.

I agree. I hope TR turns out to be great, but from what I've seen it doesn't excel at anything it does.

I guess it goes to show that if the Tomb Raider IP rests on it laurels, it's bound to be superseded in some way.

The last of us? Yes
Tomb raider? No

Tomb Raider? Not really. TLoU? Indeed.

Survival to me is about having to make the most of limited resources. The authors classification of Mario as survival-action seems an oversimplification. Just based off what I've seen of TR and TLoU I'd put the former in the action-adventure box and the latter survival-action. Regardless I like both genres and can't wait for either to arrive.
