It's not a bad ad by any means, but I get where you're coming from.
I guess it's because marketers haven't really figured out how to translate ads for games into a form that makes sense and will compel most of us to buy the product, not that most of us need an ad to convince us to buy a game we probably know we'll be getting months in advance anyway.
Toast has nothing to do with this game (except for the fact that it will flop and essentially "be toast"). I think the point of the commercial is that the guy is doing random things and it doesn't fit with the tone of the game much like how the game is a mediocre hack & slash and doesn't fit having Metal Gear slapped on it when it's not a Metal Gear game at all.
Are you f'n kidding me! Why would they not just use the EU commercial. The NA ad is commercial suicide. The tv spot is completely retro, but there isn't anything retro about Metal Gear Rising. It makes zero sense. It's just terrible. I can't imagine it's going to attract a lot of people.
I really like the ad, it's kind of like those 90s game ads where there was some sort of vague allusion to the concept of the game and this guy just had bad stuff happen to him and got mad.

What does toast and shaving have to do with Raiden?
Was this how Raiden turned into a Cyborg and got his power?
Edit @ below - Yeah it was not a bad ad just did not make any sense to me.
I agree with the gameplay and that should be a standard for all video game commercial.
I loved the Kevin Butler ads but the amount of time they focus on KB and did not show much or any game play was annoying.

Or the Halo 4 ad that only showed live action and CGI
