Xbox 720 & PlayStation 4: The Year of the Next-Generation Console

The Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 will be two defining elements for the eighth generation of gaming, which will most likely end up making this year known as "The Year of the Next-Generation Console."

In an exclusive interview with Examiner.com today, gaming journalist Geoff Keighley believes with all that is expected from the Xbox 720 and PS4, that they will define 2013.

"If there was more experimentation with pricing we'd see less of an issue with used game sales. Not all games deserve to --- or should -- charge $60," Keighley said. (Geoff Keighley, Next-Gen, PS4, Xbox One)

I find it strange, these sites keep waffling about the 720. Nobody has heard a squeak from ms.

FEB 20TH is iron clad.

bring it SONY.

its time for sony to reclaim its throne as king of home consoles.. Burned MS fans will soon come to see the beauty of PS once again.. Sony made some mistakes this gen so they forgive u & will show u whats up on the 20th.. come home people, u know that sony has your back.. Burned wii u adopters can come see nx gen in its full glory (possibly before even one killer exclusive is released on wii u) & finally loyal PS fans will get to witness what we have all been waiting for & rejoice when launch day arrives

Well you can already see better than PS4/720 graphics on PC and have been able to for quite some time.

There is no 'next gen glory' via the consoles.

But they will ALL be fun and worth the money.

That's the thing people don't understand.

That the Wii U, the PS4, the 720 can all be great systems and worth the money, but none will be actually 'powerful'. The PS4 has the best show to be decently powerful, but they'll all be 1/3rd or less the power of a midrange PC from 2013.

But technically you're right 'king of the home console'. But if it's 1/3rd of the power of a midrange PC at launch, it's a little like saying the best car at the used car lot. Or the best mass murderer to win a nobel peace prize. Or the best dead man to win a lottery. At some point the 'title' doesn't mean much.

No one is burned by MS. The only thing that's been burned is your perception of opposition.

Geoff is a bit wrong seeing how lots of people are petitioning, especially in Germany to be able to sell or trade their PC games on Steam.

So while in a sense, technology will fix the problem, it sort of doesn't when it opens up this problem, and gov'ts in Germany (already is) and assuredly later gov'ts elsewhere will press the issue.

Xbox will keep the thrown when the new consoles hit the shelves later this year (assuming that there are no delays). Their UI is an experience in itself, and makes using the Xbox fun. In terms of hardware and gameplay, I don't expect much of a difference between the two machines in the sense that processing speed will be similar. What we care about though is the online lag, which SHOULD be cut down with upgraded hardware (and hopefully better dedicated game servers). Xbox has always had better exclusives and I don't think that will change any time soon. The fact that they are eliminating used games is good! They are eliminating competition WITH THEMSELVES. Although consumers don't like this idea since they have to pay more out of their pockets, they will get a better return on their investment since buying new games will bring in more profit for producers, which will in turn lead to better quality games in the future (we'd hope). I'm very excited to see what these consoles have to offer but when it comes down to it, people want to play good games. The larger selection of games will open up more opportunity for consumerism and xbox takes that title.
