Indie developer thatgamecompany is well known for delivering interesting, emotional titles on downloadable marketplaces. Even with a solid reputation and impressive game library, the company was bankrupt when it shipped last year's Journey.
Goes to show they put everything they had into the game and it paid off.
Absolutely agree. Happy they were rewarded with so much success.
Similar was what happened with the first Final Fantasy....now look where they're at. Hope thatgamecompany has similar success, but without merging with a shitty other-company and ruining them. :P
It happened with Naughty Dog as well when they shipped Way of the Warrior. Amazing how far these studios have come.
Thank you Sony for supporting this amazing dev...
Wow, Journey just won GOTY at DICE.
They deserve it. :)
it would've been so sad if journey didn't sell well and we never saw tgc again
that was a heart-warming fan mail :)
Yeah I bet that mustve been a great feeling for them.
I will play this some day. . .I've heard good things.
You really need to, its a very unique experience. I found it to be very refreshing.
If you're open to these sort of experiences then you should try it out for sure. I personally love the game.
They will have much better chance at profiting now that they are multi-plat.
The contract is up, but I have a feeling TGC isn't done with Sony just yet. I could see Sony purchasing them, in the future.
Maybe, maybe not. They may want to remain independent too.
They aren't committed to anything, but they would be very successful going third party, as their team could grow and sustain itself to very marketable audiences, like on Steam. But I'm sure they are comfy at Sony too, question is if they want to solidify that, or branch out on their own and take more risks like they took with Journey. Regardless, I am so happy that they have these options, and that they didn't end up like Lightbox, or Eat Sleep Play.
No they won't. TGC said themselves they want to stay independent and release their games so it's available to everyone.
that's what insomniac said....... hahahahaha
Thats a real shame. I guess Flow and Flower have limited niche appeal, but both are amazing and unique games. It would have been very sad to loos a dev like this thats taking risks and doing something different. Hopefully Journey has given them the rewards theyve always deserved.
I love Flower and I love Journey, but for some reason I don't think I will ever try Flow. It just doesn't seem to catch my attention like Flower and Journey. If I did try it I would imagine I would boot it up, play for 5 minutes and never touch it again.
Well to be honest, none of those games are games that I play over and over again, but I'm glad I experienced them at least once. And its not like they are full retail games. It gives you a memory you will carry with you long after you've gotten over spending that 10 bucks.
flOw is worth playing JUST for the soundtrack, alone. Seriously.
Imagine playing flOw on a shroom trip.... I have my weekend planned.
Niche appeal lmao that make me laugh cuz in mi country we call black people "niches" i haven't hear that word in a decade and btw they don't get mad like the black people from the USA just cuz u used the N word or whatever word our black people they are not that delicate I'm not making fun of nobody ok On topic: awesome game go get it u need to play this game if u haven't
so did its release save tgc from a nasty financial situation? obv they didnt go under so i would imagine. article doesnt specify. glad they didnt go under. hope the best for them. really enjoyed flow and flower. someday ill dl journey
That letter was awesome. Games are becomes much more than just games.
Don't read that letter if you don't want teary eyes. I tried to warn you...
Was warned, still teared up :'C
I don't think I've ever been happier for a game to sell well. If Thatgamecompany had been unable to continue, it would have been a crime.
Experiences like these are just remarkable and I'm glad Fans came and supported this game on PSN. Everyone on the other side that called this game an over priced glorified interactive screensaver really never understand that there is a market for these games. And I'm extremely glad that Journey saved TGC. Talent and development philosophy and innovation like this needs to live on and invigorate this industry which is barely putting out anything more than Call of Duty and AC games. Granted there is a place for those in our industry, but its nice to see that risks, gambles and innovation still thrives. heres to TGC moving forward with there next title and prospering now that they have split amicably with Sony and encouragement to Sofia and her family. :)
oh wow.... brings me tears to eyes :( And they said games are turning ppl into murders and shit like that? FUCK YOU POLITICAINS = REAL MURDERS!!!!
This is what gaming's all about.. bringing people together for joy... I think some of us have forgotten that....
This is one reason ive always loved about sony. They arent afraid to let devs who create exclusive games for them try different things. Ive always noticed that sony always was open to devs coming up with something that could either be successful or wouldnt really really get the recognition it deserved. Its a big reason why ive owned every playstation platform was because of sony giving devs freedom to bring new game experiences to its fan base.
Man i want to get journey but I'm afraid when i do it becomes free for PS+.....
Chose the Right Platform!
What a fantastic game its a shame that some people bash it because it isnt full of mindless violence like so many games on the market. @clintagious650 Yep your absolutely right which is why we have so many new ips due to Sonys heavy support of innovative developers.
Still have to play Journey, heard great things about it. On my radar, just havn't made it there yet.
After investing 22 hours into the game, Journey is one of the best videogames I've ever played just like shadow of the colossus
