Warren Spector Doesn’t Think Lollipop Chainsaw Should Have Been Made

Kotaku: "Warren Spector, one of the most respected game designers out there and the lead creator of the revered Deus Ex, did something unusual for a game designer today. At a talk at the DICE convention in Las Vegas, he named a name... or at least he let one of his slides name the name of a game that, he says, 'should just not be made.'

The game? Warner Brothers and Grasshopper Manufacture's violent, lowbrow game Lollipop Chainsaw on the screen." (Industry, Lollipop Chainsaw, Warren Spector)

I disagree with his disagreement.
Godchild1020  +   833d ago
He should have thought about that with Epic Mickey 2 and going multiple platform with it.
yesmynameissumo  +   833d ago
His opinion isn't invalid simply because ME2 wasn't a hit. Lollipop Chainsaw was a shit game. Combat was atrocious and the little humor it did have wore off 20 minutes in.
Baka-akaB  +   833d ago
It was easily better than epic mickey to begin with . And no i dont even like Lollipop chainsaw either way
guitarded77  +   833d ago
I think he's full of crap, but I'll give him some leeway on this because it was said behind closed doors to a group of game designers, and was just an example in his presentation. Of course he can have his opinion, but using the game as an example isn't winning him any friends in the developer community. I personally think Warren is overrated, and Suda (although pretentious as all hell) is under appreciated (not underrated... I said under appreciated). Warren is against gratuitous violence, but Lollipop carries an "M" rating, so it can have as much ultra-violence as it wants. If he wants to make non-violent games... more power to him, but don't piss on someone else's work because they have a different vision/ideology.

Warren Spector is hardly overrated , but he isnt safe from making bad games , case in point with the quite uninteresting Epic Mickey series .

Otherwise i agree

okay warren is starting to get on my nerves, in a world where a majority of games are these overly serious, dark and gritty games, and lollipop chainsaw comes out and is a breath of fresh air and he has problems withit, warren just stop.
typikal82  +   833d ago
Agreed, I think LC is great, haven't played a fun silly game like it in a good while
rainslacker  +   832d ago
I agree. I don't even like zombie games, but the entire campy B-Rated feel of the game was rather entertaining, and the various jokes, at least those not teen sex related, actually made me laugh. The fighting got redundant after a while, but the game was really well done and presented better than many other AAA games out there.
uncharted56  +   833d ago
Epic fail 2 shouldn't had been made imo :)
Dark11  +   833d ago
This guy is a joke.
Kevlar009  +   833d ago
It was made by Suda51, what else would you expect? He's known for making over the top, quiky games. It's like saying Quinten Tarantino films should never be made because they're "tastless", or too gory. They fill a niche other films (in this case games) that few other developers make.

This game is just another example of Video Games as entertainment. Call of Duty or Rayman doesn't teach us about morality or life, what's wrong with this?
Skate-AK  +   833d ago
And it just so happens to be Grasshopper Manufacture's best selling game. I thought it was funny. The dialog was ridiculous. I ended up platnimuming it.
matrixman92  +   833d ago
lol...he made epic mickey 1 and 2. His opinion is invalid on any subject
Yodagamer  +   833d ago
Epic mickey was pretty good imo, but two just was a let down. Plus deus ex is another game he designed

So were just gonna ignore the rest of his portfolio and position in the history of the industry? Why is everyone always so QUICK to recklessly disrespect someone just because of an opinion?
rainslacker  +   832d ago
He also made Wing Commander, had a part to play in many Ultima games, System Shock, Thief, and Deus Ex. He's no hack in the industry.
matrixman92  +   832d ago
his last good game was almost a decade ago...sounds like the George Lucas of video games. he just needs to learn when to quit
Megaplaynate  +   833d ago
Funny, I don't think epic mickey should have been made, and yet even a sequel came out.
And "I want content that is relevant to my life, that is relevant to me, that is set in the real world...", seriously?
scissor_runner  +   833d ago
Wait epic mickey was in the real world whhhhhhhhaaaaattttt!

Some one is angry he trashed his fav ip... Ooops!
TongkatAli  +   833d ago
We need more games like God Hand and this.
Heavenly King  +   833d ago
gameplay-wise Fist of the north star Ken's Rage 1/2 are very similar to God hand.
Venox2008  +   833d ago
but God Hand is much better :D
Bathyj  +   833d ago
So he's saying he loved games like that when he was a kid, but because he's grown up now, and no longer wants that type of experience, that game should never have been made?

Lets be clear Warren, YOU personally never wanting to buy a particular game and that game never should having being made are two different things.

Some people ARE still at a point where they want this title, so the game is about them, its not about YOU. Get over yourself.

He goes on to praise Heavy Rain and Walking Dead, which is great, I'm glad some devs are making games like this and I'm glad some gamers want them enough to support them, me included, but it doesnt mean they should be the only options.

And this is different to David Cage saying the gaming industry should grow up and embrace more mature titles as well. It should. But never did he say ALL games should be like that or more action games with less lofty goals should disappear.

I like intellectual high brow films that make you think and feel, but I like mindless fluff, popcorn movies too. We can have both, and everything in between.

Gaming has room for many types of genres and many types of gamers, why would you want them to only cater to you?
mochachino  +   833d ago
If even only one gamer loved it then it should have...

...of course not from a financial point of view.
SeraphimBlade  +   833d ago
I think there's a place for "immature" entertainment as much as the more thoughtful kind. Some days I want introspective games that challenge my values and make me think about my actions. Some days I just want zombies, rainbows and dick jokes; and The Walking Dead only has one of those things.

And having liked Lollipop Chainsaw more than a good number of people, I have to say it's quite a bit more clever than those people give it credit for, at least in terms of writing. (I'll concede the actual gameplay is far from great, but it works for me)

It's a good thing I'm not petty, or I'd suggest somebody's just bitter Epic Mickey didn't do better (/ wasn't better.)
cyhm3112  +   833d ago
he is a racist and he doesn't like Japanese.
DigitalAnalog  +   833d ago
What the fuck? One of his favorite games is Suikoden.
sypher  +   833d ago
There is not such thing as a "game that shouldn't be made".

If we are to treat the medium as a creative expression of ourselves then there is no such thing as creative wrong. As all idea's stem from the same place one has no significant meaning than any other. It's just others who experience that creative work place that meaning upon it.

Just as there is no book that should not of been written or movie that should not have been made. To dismiss an individual creative input as meaningless, immature, embarrassing or what ever label you want to use means you are not looking at games as a medium. But as a form of entertainment that you then judge based on your personal morality scale.

Bathyj  +   833d ago
well, in hindsight ET probably shouldnt have been made.
sypher  +   833d ago
haha if it wasn't we wouldn't have a barometer of how terrible a game could be :D
Bathyj  +   833d ago
and atari would still be making consoles
madjedi  +   833d ago
Yeah whatever this is the same blow hard complaining, about too much violence in games.

If mario or zelda bothered to show realistic effects of the players actions it wouldn't be treated with kid gloves by the anti violence brigade.

Chainsawing a locast in half in gears or stomping on a gomba, either why they are still both violent acts regardless.

Last 2 games he made were epic mickey 1 and 2, and he is complaining about lollypop chainsaw's low brow humor. Exactly how much sophistication is a mickey mouse game going to have, your not writing shakespeare.

David Cage trashing duke nukem forever, would be one thing but a disney ip director trying to dictate morals is laughable at best.

Tired of stupid wanna be sophisticated gamers, that pretend gaming is some new high society bs art form that needs to be held to the highest moral standards.

When you hypocrites treat movies and books with the same double standard, maybe the average gamer will pay attention to you. Till then i see just as much if not more trash or low brow from hollywood than from the games industry.

If you haven't made a well received game in many yrs, why would your opinion be relevant.

"If we're going to reach a broader audience, we have to stop thinking about that audience strictly in terms of teenage boys or even teenage girls. We need to think about things that are relevant to normal humans and not just the geeks we used to be."

Sounds like dumbing it down for non gamers or losing his passion to me.
