New trailer for Tomb Raider released – “Exploration”

"We've been looking forward to this one for some time, and it appears that the new adventure won't be as linear as some might expect."

"We've been looking forward to this one for some time, and it appears that the new adventure won't be as linear as some might expect."

Havent they been saying this is open world the whole time?

nitrogav4089d ago

How can you have open world when there isn't even any swimming in it ? . Wonder when she falls into water does it mean instant death . Even my five year old can swim !! . Was really looking forward to this game until I found that out . Oh dear .

violents4089d ago

look at older GTA titles, they were open world and you would die when you fell in the water. But the story never took you to need to go in the water so it wasnt a big deal.

So as long as it doesnt seem like it impedes the story I'm fine with the no swimming, however for a tomb raider game it seems weird, there was almost always a part where you had to swim in all the older ones.

@violents

Yeah but this is 2013 now

I'm pretty sure the reason we couldn't swim in old GTA games was because of animations problems or something or the tec at the time...it was a PS2 game that didn't rely on swimming. I think when making their open world games as big as those Rockstar thought swimming wasn't really on the to do list

But come on this is Lara Croft swimming was a big part of the old TR games, unlike AC where Altair couldn't swim you had nothing to compare it to since it was the first AC game

You know whats really put me off though

1) It looks like Uncharted instead of trying to be it's own game

2) Regenerating health...it's Tomb Raider those medpacks would of been perfect for this game

They really should of stuck with the original Lara's back story about her plane going down in the Himalayas where her parents and fiance die and she's left alone....THAT would of hardened her the most

Xklaw4089d ago

Wait, what?... No swimming? How can she be in an island and no swimming? besides, it´s tomb raider, they can´t do that.

Clover9044089d ago (Edited 4089d ago )

That's such a small gripe. To each their own, but come on, this game looks great. Sure, it would be annoying if its instant death if you go into deep water. Hopefully they just don't let you go into water to begin with.

And it's not like they stay away from water. 0:27, 3:18... Looks like you'll be in it plenty when it serves the storyline.

This is what they have said from day 1 :

"The structure is not open world. Not in the GTA, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed sense," Gallagher told NowGamer. "We do have hubs. We've not actually shown any hubs - you've seen a pocket of exploration. That is not a hub we've shown yet."

Lara Croft will be able to revisit areas for further rewards later on too.
"At some point we'll actually show the hubs, which are larger. They're still not open-world, but they allow some freedom, the ability to find secondary tombs, the ability to actually go at your own pace in places and really explore the island," Gallagher explained.

"All this stuff is interconnected - so it is an island that's in one location, and there is an interconnected hub-and-spoke model. And you can actually go back and re-traverse areas and go re-explore as well, once you've discovered them through the base-camp system."

Sweet! the trailer answers my questions and, puts my concerns for a linear game to rest. I think it's gonna be a day 1 buy now.

Walker4089d ago

The game is completely spoiled !

DigitalSmoke4089d ago

Its definately trying to trump Uncharted, but all i see are gimicks and an atempt at copieng some of its camera work.
Tombraider was a tuff, prety cool action shooter/climber at its start, it had something raw when Lara got attacked by a tiger, or if she died by falling down a cave.

Now in this generation, she has been pop cultured, with her boat/summer/winter/fancy cave gear (Barbie) cloth, its prety much over man, its pathetic.

My_Name_BTW_Is_Dante4089d ago

Meh. I don't really care for a shootem up adventure with Lora Craft. I'd rather go back to the old days of raiding tombs with Lara Croft instead.

The Best Tomb Raider Games Ranked

We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9554d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro54d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot54d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist53d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx54d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188154d ago (Edited 54d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9554d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist54d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp54d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg54d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion54d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
