Home consoles are no long the thing in Japan. Especially new ones without an interesting catalog of Japanese-specific games.

Nintendo system
stationary system
lack of Japanese games
high price
low sales

as for Vita...

handheld system, successor to PSP
deficit of Japanese games
high price
low sales

handheld system, successor to DS
Nintendo system
library of Japanese games
low price
very high sales

or in soccer terms:
WiiU - 1:3 loss
Vita - 1:2 loss
3DS - 4:0 overwhelming victory

Everyone seems to be buying 3DS's for their Nintendo fix instead.

No major release pal. Pikmin will be out in 2 months, it will boost the wii u sales maybe for near 3ds numbers. Then, it is up to nintendo to maintain the good games flow to keep the sales momentum.
