Why GTA V is not going to be next gen

Grand Theft Auto V, the highly anticipated next installment of one of the worlds most popular franchises, was initially announced for a "Spring 2013" release date for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Fast forward a few months to the start January, Rockstar Games made a promise of unveiling the official cover art and fast forward to the end of January; Rockstar all but scrapped the plans to unveil the cover art by the end of January and instead, announced that the game would be delayed until September 17, 2013; citing the need for "extra development time" as well as "additional polishing" (Grand Theft Auto V, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

Hopefully not I don't want to have to purchase a next gen just for slightly better graphics.

i don't think RS will put a great effort into releasing a slightly better looking game on next gen systems which will have very small install bases.

that's is why GTA5 is on current consoles, 75 million install base right now and by september should be way over 80 million.

also anyone who is gonna want GTA5 will get it and not wait an extra 3-6 months for what could be slight improvements

80 million x 2 = 160 million

That's a LOT

Exactly

This being developed for PS3/360 obviously means it would take wayyyy more time to recode the entire game for a new console, it doesn't make sense to throw out all that hard work on coding for current gen consoles.

Also, with a massive install base in current gen it only makes sense to code for current gen and continue polishing rather than starting code from scratch.

Well with PC x86 version and possible x86 in PS4/X720. It would take less than a few months to really port it over. Date slipped from March until when again? September you say? :P

Sure the install base isn't there yet, but do you want consumers to forget your product when the new consoles come out or enjoy it for awhile on the new and old generation hardware.

Focus should be on the next Red Dead, Bully, & Manhunt games for next-gen. Agent too if that's still in development. The next GTA should release later in the next-gen life cycle when its install base is larger.

Well I don't think they would skip out on PS3/360 now, but R* might have secured a next gen exclusivity deal (timed or not) for GTAV.

That would both give them the sales from this gen and a chance to get some knowledge of the new hardware...

First of all you can pre-order it, there is a install base of around 160 million when you combine the 360/PS3. I doubt they will release it on next gen as well, especially since those consoles probably wont be out until November and GTA5 is supposed to release in September.

Rockstar has postponed their games before, they have also released a GTA game near the end of a generation and they didn't put that version on new hardware. The thing with Rockstar is that they take their time, they have probably been working on GTA5 since before GTA4 launched, they take their time and do things right.
