How does Sega sell its free-to-play Phantasy Star Online 2 title to Japan?

Sega has this problem in Japan, Phantasy Star 2 Online is free-to-play on the Vita and PC, but the company wants to make some cash up front. So, to tempt those who can't download it, or just like extra stuff, it looks like the boxed copy will come with a load of goodies.

Love this series - the fact that the Vita version is free is amazing. I played a little of the PC version last year, and it's excellent. Could well be the game to save the Vita - certainly in Japan.

Does it contain micro transactions? and do you need to buy things to progress through the game?
I'm really looking forward to the Vita version and I'm just wondering how it works since it's free to play.
I mean whats the catch?

There's loads of extra kit you can buy in game, either by collecting in-game Ark cash, or buying with micro transactions. Depends if you want to grind for stuff or pay for it up front.

It works very well as a free game - as in, you don't HAVE to spend money, and you don't feel like you're forced to. The only time I ever wanted to spend any money was on an alt character slot - but sorting out a Japanese Credit card and address was a real pain even with a guide on how to do it, so gave up playing and decided to wait for the western release.
