Is Blizzard Racist? Diablo 3

Ghost Lily of Ludos-Mundi.com asks the difficult question.

Diablo 3 was massive for me. I was fairly disappointed by it, which is a whole ‘nother can o’ worms, but actual gameplay issues aside, I was surprised by one thing: the horrific racial misappropriation. (Culture, Diablo III, Industry, PC, PS Vita, PS3, Xbox 360)

What? This is absurd. The reason there isn't caucasians in the jungle is probably because that is how the world has been not say we all didn't come from that at one point but in more recent light of history it's never been that way.

Most the caucasian groups all conquered everything and generally most people who live in indigenous regions are not caucasian. Actually I can't even think of any that are truly caucasian.

I don't see what is so hard to understand about that, all they did was relate the game to our horrible history of humanity.

Regardless I don't find it remotely offensive, it's just logical. You are never going to find some damn witch doctor in the city who is caucasian of all things and if you do it's probably some hippy who traverses through jungles studying them.. Which practically defeats the purpose.

While you have valid points, and ones that I agree with, I think you may be missing the the big picture.

I've always been hesitant to believe that racism existed in gaming. Gender problems YES, but racism, no.

But wait. As I pay closer attention, I am able to see more of it. Sometimes it's subtle and sometimes it's pretty obvious.

This is not to mention what goes on during COD matches in chat. That's a whole can of worms and those are Freedom of speech rights. I don't agree with them but idiots have a right to their racist opinion.

Developers don't have that right! Not if they want a good reputation.

That's just my 2 cents.

peoples who see racism everywhere are usually the first to have blatant racist prejudices wrapped around their brain.

@profgerbik: I get that they're retelling history, but they could've used the fact that this is a make believe world - Sanctuary obviously isn't real - and made the class equal to everyone else.

I think it really says something about the role of racism in our society that our first instinct in an imaginary world is to give Black people the unfair end of the stick. Can we not imagine a world where people of darker skin colors were always given equal opportunity and they advanced outside the constraints of Eurocentric policy, war, and rule?

@cycofoo831: It's true, there is a ton of other racism in the game, but this article centers on just one problem. The Trolls from WoW are a whole other story and just as bad, I think.
