Majora’s Mask is Nothing Without Ocarina of Time

While Ocarina of Time is widely considered to be the pinnacle of The Legend of Zelda franchise, we at Zelda Informer are known to often refute that and place Majora’s Mask at the top of the podium. We claim that Majora’s Mask has more emotion, greater character development, and a larger moral significance than Ocarina of Time.

Sometimes we even declare that Ocarina of Time has nothing on Majora’s Mask, but that is to forget the very fundamental truth that Majora’s Mask is nothing without Ocarina of Time. The original Nintendo 64 classic is a standalone title that leaves nothing more to be desired in gameplay or in story. Hyrule is saved and the Hero is sent back to regain the time he has lost. There is no need for anything more. (3DS, The Legend of Zelda, Wii, Wii U)

Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, and Link to the Past are my top three. Although Wind Waker comes very close. Either way, those three are just so good does it really matter which is better?

What do you think of Link`s Awakening?

Link's Awakening was amazing. It's one of my favorite Zelda's ever made. I loved Minish Cap too and the Oracle titles. Handheld Zelda games were some of the best.

It was a perfect transition to bring the Zelda experience to a portable gaming device, though I must say story wise I was a little bit bitter about the ending. Though its one of my first gameboy games I played when I was growing up so I can forgive it.

@NukaCola
Oracle titles were indeed awesome I wished Capcom did as they were planning originally and have three titles versus just two. Though I sympathize with the development complications they were having.

They've all had something special and memorable about them but all Legend of Zelda games are still missing something that makes them all perfect.

Each game it's a bit different on what it is.

They do A,B,& C right on Game # 1

Then comeback and screw those things up in game #2 but add cool things D,E & F...

They just need to focus on letting us explore and giving us an OoT like experience.

Remember when you first played Ocarina....You never experienced anything like that before...Not even close..

We need that again.

I'd love an HD remake of the both
Multiplayer in the Zelda series would totally work, considering that Link in always companioned by AI characters.

Twilight Princess x Midna = two players co-op (traverse through two dimensions, while intertwining to solve puzzles and aid in defeating foes)!

Ocarina of Time was brilliant, but loses to Majora's Mask on a few accounts. 1. The music in MM was much more emotional than OoT, 2. The story was more heartfelt in MM compared to OoT's cliched Hero vs Bad Guy Save the World from Evil and protect Princess and show just enough affection to give birth to corny fanfictions, 3. The combat and graphics were more refined, but that's to be expected, finally, 4. The characters were easier to understand and felt like actual people, compared to 2 (or in some cases 1) dimensional characters in OoT. Not saying its fact, but it's my opinion.

I'll give ya a fact: The mask system was awesome! Bunny Hood and Bomb Blast Masks were epic!

Majora's Mask was the superior game in every right. Ocarina of Time is just a tech demo... A first step into the 3D world, where as MM is the first full leap into a 3D experience for Link. It is the same with Final Fantasy VIII, but people disagree either because they are videogame illiterate, or because it was baby's first game.

Every Zelda game to date has been built around a single core gameplay experience. With Skyward Sword, it was using the Wiimote to swing a sword; with Ocarina, it was exploring a vast 3D world.

Every Zelda game to date.

Except Majora's Mask.

MM is the only Zelda game to focus SOLELY on refining and perfecting the gameplay elements from the previous game, honing them to perfection. That's why rather than have a single defining gameplay experience, Majora's Mask has AT LEAST three different core mechanics.

This makes it both the richest and most divisive Zelda title.

Majora's Mask was only possible because of Ocarina of Time. MM does not make OoT somehow a lesser game. I'm sorry, but calling Ocarina of Time a tech demo is a horridly misguided statement that applies to Ocarina of Time just as easily as to every other Zelda title ever made.
