GTA V Delay: Analyst Thinks Some Form Of Next Gen Release Possible

Tom Ivan: ''Responding to today's Grand Theft Auto V delay, Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz has suggested that Rockstar may be planning to eventually release the game on the next generation of consoles in some form.'' (Doug Creutz, Grand Theft Auto V, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360)

Nah, I don't see that.

It was never going to release in Q2.

TL:DR - **I personally don't believe that, just as Rockstar North entered the originally announced release quarter someone decided, "Nah, we need more polish". Games releases and development are planned way ahead of time. It was a planned tactic to spike interest for an otherwise distant release. As well as a statement to all other publishers when EXACTLY Grand Theft Auto V would be launching so that they may plan their releases accordingly**
_____________________________ ______________________________

The trick is this; Most pre orders for a game are placed much closer to it's launch, the reason for that is that the average consumer doesn't plan very far ahead. Ask any Game Stop employee, the most pre orders for a really popular title are placed very close to it's release date.

Announcing it to release in Q2 means a lot more people would have reacted and pre ordered it now than if they originally announced it for release in September.

They always planned the release date to be Q3/Q4 (almost every GTA game has released in October, except, I think, GTA IV and Lost & Damned). This is just a marketing tactic to raise consumer interest and awareness. Take 2's stocks dropped when the delay was announced but their pre orders were higher than they would have been otherwise.

An successful example of this marketing tactic being employed is Gears of War 3, which was originally announced to release in April and then was later delayed to Q3. Yes, they publicly claim that the delay was for this or that other reason. I know that. But I also know that it was revealed, somewhere mid-year that Gears of War 3 had outsold Uncharted 3 in pre orders alone. You might be thinking that it's more because of the marketing that Gears 3 had, but consider for a moment what I'm suggesting: That the delay was a part of marketing.

Also consider that GTA is a very real threat to sales. Competing publishers often work in respect of each other. Everyone knows that November will see a Call of Duty game from Activision and an Assassin's Creed from Ubisoft as well as a ton of other big names make waves. Take 2 respects that and made it clear that they won't move into such defined territory. It would hurt Take 2 just as much as it would hurt the other publishers, so what's the point? Also note that, as far as I'm aware, there are very few titles (if any) announced for Q3 this year so now, with GTA V's release made clear and public, the other publishers know how to move.

It's funny how people think making a game next gen is as simple as putting it on a different disc. A game of this magnitude being switched to another console could delay it for 1 possibly even 2 years
RevXM  +   571d ago
Well I disagree.
There is some work, but they have all the assets, other contents and so on, so a straight port shouldnt take long porting to a system that is multiple times as powerful as existing consoles today unless they change something dramatically like say they never made all the assets in a high enough quality to begin with so they would have to do it all over instead of rescaling them wether it be geometry, effects or textures and shaders.
isarai  +   571d ago
Assets isn't what makes issues, it's rendering techniques, shaders, AI, computing load distributing, LODs, etc. this game has been optimized specifically for this gens consoles, bringing it to a completely new platform that has an entirely new architecture they they have no practice with or knowledge of would be such a setback that it's not worth it
Ps_alm3k  +   570d ago
yea, but if next gen is off the shelf pc parts, then porting it to next gen be easy? since they are developing it on and for pc.
azshorty2003  +   571d ago
I agree. Especially with the different architecture of the PS3 and PS4. They would have to completely redevelop the game. Developing for the Cell is completely different then the CPU they're using in the PS4. I just don't see it.

It took this many years to develop for this gens systems. There's no way they're going to make a next-gen version in 4 months. Think about it people.

"I agree. Especially with the different architecture of the PS3 and PS4."

That has nothing to do with it. PS4 is apparently going to have much more traditional architecture, so a total redesign wouldn't be necessary. Quality ports should be much easier next gen, so they'd just port the 720 version to PS4. It would still take some time, say about six months. ; ) That said, I don't think Rockstar would bother. Even if PS4 and 720 sell a total of 20 million consoles by the end of the year, which won't happen, there will still be 120 million + people who don't have one so Rockstar would be doing extra work with little return. I'm sure they'd rather start from scratch for next gen GTA. Of course, the GTA5 engine could have been designed for both current and next gens already...
N0S3LFESTEEM  +   569d ago
not technically... They could leave core gameplay mechanics alone and focus more on Ai and graphical expansions. Completely possible in the amount of time that they delayed for.
GiantFriendlyCrab  +   571d ago
if ps4 can play ps3 games, we can play gta 5. But i will not be surprised if rockstar decides to also release also a superior gta 5 version for the ps4 and next xbox, maybe thats why it has been delayed ?, they are maybe working for current gen consoled and next gen

Nah nah nah no.
GTA V looks AWESOME for what it is. A game made with 7yr old hardware with 512mb of ram and old GPUs. To move it next gen and simply tweak it will never do the game justice, as next gen is going to provide graphical fidelity beyond what we have ever seen on consoles before.
Rockstar, we look foward to GTA V this gen. Two years from now, release a teaser for a next gen GTA6 so we can pick our jaws off the floor again.
Screw a port of GTA, next gen, built from the ground up GTA 6 only ! :)

Graphics have hit their peak for the moment... until raytracing makes it to market the most you'll see from future games is better lighting and physics support. Higher resolutions are a given but framrates are most likely going to hover around the 30fps mark... the quality coming from next gen titles will be enough to make the 680 hover around that mark but it will still be more powerful.

Doubt it.

Wii U
Chances are it is going to get there eventually anyway but Nintendo likely talked them into a day and date release. there is absolutely no other reason to delay the game. If it was for one of the others they would still have released Spring.

After all the rumors it should be obvious. It will get on Wii U eventually.

Seriously, think about it. How many times have these GTA Wii U rumors been doing the rounds?

How many times did the MGS4 on 360 rumors make the rounds?

*Edit

@tehpees

>No way on Earth has GTA V been delayed to accommodate Wii U port...keep dreaming....

The GTA V delay doesn't bother me in the slightest...I have Last of Us & Beyond on PS3 and Gears of War Judgement & State of Decay on 360 to look forward to ;)

probably will have a ps4 release as well this is what some games did with the x360 and xbox same games but the x360 version was better hd graphics. Also gta5 probably gonna be coming out on pc and the ps4 is much closer to a pc so i expect it to not be that hard since console thats like pc will be easier to make a game for then just console or just a pc. Also ps4 is easy to develop for.
dirthurts  +   571d ago
You just made all that up.
Thatmattkid  +   571d ago
Who ses they haven't been developing a PS4 version from the start?
MultiConsoleGamer  +   570d ago
I hope not only becuase if they do I'm going to have to wait even longer to play this game.
Funky_Homosapien  +   570d ago
The consoles are gonna be backwards compatible so whats the point of making it on next gen.
