Sony dominated for two straight generations before stumbling during this cycle. Here are five things that Sony can do to get back on top.
i like the word you use "regain" as if they lost quality over this console they released (ps3) and if regaining dominance means going the wii route, then i hope sony does what they always do and give us games. besides, the ps3 is the leader of the pack. look at the sales.
I think they're talking about dominance in terms of market share and not quality.
They are but if you look at the majority of the article some of the reason, imho, are too far off scope. The 1st reason was most likely the best out of the 5 and on point. The 2nd reason is a contradiction to the 1st; I understand the additions that people want but there are a lot of legal ties Sony has to deal with in order to imply what people want plus the headset thing is give or take depending on the user. The 3rd is a bust because we all know Sony patented that technology way before the wii was thought of. The 4th item is a given, they already have that and the comment is more in regards to 3rd party support. And the last item is a sham, I see nothing wrong with the xross media bar; but I will admit updates need to be revamped, but if the author had PS+ they wouldn't have to worry about that.
Regaining dominance has nothing to do with quality. PS2 dominated the market vs GameCube and Xbox. PS3 has sold the least out of all of the consoles. I'm gonna hazard a guess...that's what they're talking about. It says nothing about quality. I wonder why you've only got one bubble. Because you can't read perhaps?
Id it true they sold the least? I thought Xbox got that last month or something? Anyways who cares the market dominance will never exist witht he 3 current companies in the business it just will not.
Dominance, in this sense, has nothing to do with quality. On the other hand, it's not like Sony's THAT far off with the PS3, in terms of sales. I mean, let's say the PS3 DOES go on to sell 150 million(after about ten years on the market, as the PS2 didn't sell all that at the same age the PS3 is now). That wouldn't stop the Wii from selling about 100 million, and the 360- assuming that it sells at a somewhat constant pace- could also see triple digit sales. (In fact, this is possible, anyway... except the PS3 seeing 150 million.) Is it STILL a failure on Sony's part that they didn't dominate? This is the first generation where all consoles have seen more than 50 million sales; in order for Sony to do what it did last generation, the PS3 would have to sell between 300-450 million units. Like that's gonna happen any time soon. Should Sony be penalized- and, really, that's what's happening here- because the market has grown to the point where it can sustain multiple systems selling more than 70 million units apiece? The PS3 is considered by some to be a failure because it won't maintain the market dominance of its predecessors. To assume it would even be possible in the current market condition is ridiculous, at best.
Dominance in the market is unrelated to quality. Does Sony put out quality stuff? Hell yeah. But they are a shadow of what they were in the PS2 days. And no, the PS3 is not the leader of the pack, that'd be the Wii.
Like @tentonsoftube said "ps3 is the leader of the pack." ps3 already has control and will not fail to impress and continue giving quality. and with ps4 on the way its just not fair.
They should keep up with PLUS with the PS3 + PS4 + Vita games to be honest, it's one of the best features Sony has ever gave to PSN Now all we need is a group chat system and a Clan system up and running :)
Yeah the lack of cross party chat is kinda a deal breaker for a lot of people I know. You can't have the community that a 360 has where you have several friends talking. So if I'm considering a multi-plat, normally go for 360. Except things with several discs :p Shame most of the games are getting kinda stale though. 360 could do with a Ni No Kuni
The thing about the xbox is before they had 8 person cross game chat they all had something else that was deal breaker. The cross game chat isn't deal breaker it really isn't its just the last line in the sand. So people pretend that its life or death but its not.
3 more: 1. support more Japanese games 2. international psn store 3. backwards compatible for ps3 and ps2 games
I like your number 1 idea! However I don't think its going to happen. Japanese developers could barely afford to develop on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Most of the Japanese developers have invested into the portable market and Wii U. However, Sony needs to internally make more Japanese style games. I would love for them to greenlight a first party RPG on the PS4 with the budget of a Uncharted or Killzone game.
Regain ? Never lost Dominance ! End of !
They could just keep on doing what they've been doing for the last 3 years. The only reason why they were in 3rd most of the time is due to their first bad years.
The only thing I can think of is to launch at around the same time as the new Xbox. They have the library already, maybe just improve the online (which, cross-game party chat will be standard anyway). They already said PS+ will continue, so that is already good news. I don't know, I thought the only reason they weren't mega-dominant this gen was because they were late to the party. This time they won't be with the PS4 (I can only presume).
I doubt we see anything like we saw with the PS1/PS2 from any company in the future. I think everything will be closely matched, sort of like this generation with the exception of the Wii. It will all come down to preference and which companies can offer the most to every type of gamer out there.
1.) make sure u can play Ps1-Ps3 games and make it accessible in the marketplace. 2.) have the best studios make the best game in their favorite genre so we can have AAA games in fps, action adventure, rpg, ect... 3.) a delivery service! I want to be able to order pizza on my ps4! 4.) the MMO takeover! 5.) custom soundtracks!
Yeah because I'll be playing sooo many PS1 and PS2 games on my PS4. Get over BC and keep your consoles. Let Sony spend that money on more power, better build quality, bigger HD, more ports, a free game, etc. I still have my PS1, PS2, and PS3 - I didn't touch my PS1 this gen and I played MG3 on PS2 for literally 5 minutes before I said f'this blurry mess, I'm getting the HD Version for 14.99 with 3 games. Gamers think they want BC but they probably spend 99% of their time playing next-gen games on their next-gen systems. If they aren't, why did they buy a next-gen console in the first place when their still happy playing the old one?
I'm going with the next xbox then...
Yea i've never really known anyone to just play old games once new systems are out very much. I mean sure someone will play like Mgs4 or something but since most people will use BC 1x in there gen life it really is not worth the money and time it takes to include it. It is not that hard unless you are super lazy and unorganized to pull out the old system hook it up and play.
How about having less arrogance next time around? Certainly the majority of N4G can agree to that right?
Sony has never lost, it tied.
Personally, I felt like Sony won this gen (not talking sales wise). They had the best line up of games, free online, and not to mention PS Plus. For me at least, I had so much fun this gen and I'm very thankful for every game I've played. I don't know about you but the real winners are the gamers who enjoyed what console they got to the fullest. Not those who've been too busy arguing over which console is the best rather than actually having fun with all the quality games that were offered throughout the years.
regain dominance? LOL that was a good laugh. let me wipe the tear from my eye from laughing so hard. sony doesnt have to regain shit, they ARE the dominant one. you say wii. wii is in another bracket that has nothing to do with hd consoles. you say 360. ps3 surpassed 360 at the end part of last year. you combine the two. those two console is faltering, huffing and puffing, as in, they are on their last legs, if not already dead. the ps3 on the other hand is is still going strong. lets be honest, the party just begun for the ps3, thanks to its 10+ year life cycle, thanks to sony. you think plus was a rushed product to keep up with live? it was all part of the greater plan to further show the value the ps brand really has. if the ps4 does indeed get released this year...all i can say is, double trouble for the other two on the console front.
