Review: Omerta: City of Gangsters {Vagary.tv}

The Strategy Gamer reviews Omerta: City of Gangsters.

"Omerta: City of Gangsters is a strategic level simulation of mafia activity in Atlantic City during the age of Prohibition. You begin the campaign as a fresh-off-the-boat immigrant, working your way up through the criminal underground in your quest to be Capo di Tutti Capi- boss of all bosses. Along the way you’ll participate in all sorts of criminal activity from a strategic point of view, and when all hell breaks loose, you’ll take on your foes in turn-based tactical battles. Both elements are deep and compelling, providing an effort worthy of the Mafia’s high standing in our culture."

5 out 5 is entirely too generous for this game.

2/5 is much too harsh for this game.

I didn't realize everybody had to think exactly the same about everything. Must not have gotten the memo.

I heard the game doesn't have rival crime families?is that true...How does Omerta compare to Gangsters: Organized Crime?

Rivalries are reflected through various campaign missions (jobs, combat events and such) and there are independently owned (competing) businesses. There aren't any competing families directly portrayed in the gameplay, however. If you were just playing sandbox mode, you wouldn't get much of a taste of it.

As for comparisons to Gangsters, same era, different location (AC as opposed to Chicago), all strategic actions occur in real time, and there's more of an attempt to achieve compelling combat. As I recall, Gangsters was set up so that you'd give orders, and then see them carried out in real time. This is more of a RTS God-game (though without the fast pace).
