IBTimes UK - "Again, it's a case of big numbers on paper actually meaning low sales in reality. When you consider that 20 billion apps were downloaded from the App Store in 2012, more than one billion people now have Facebook accounts, and in March 2012, Apple was able to sell 3 million iPads in 3 days, it's easy to believe that an exploitable market exists for apps, social networking and tablet-based gaming. But the point that Nintendo seems to be missing with its reheated Wii U is that large figures like these don't necessarily mean people want these things - they mean people already have these things."
1. Name and marketing. Wii U sounds and has been advertised as if it is an add on for the Wii. Bad idea
2. The controller. It is in direct competition with tablets now (from a mass market perspective) and these consumers would rather have a fully fledged tablet than an extremely limiting one. I personally do not see this controller as a killer app which is how it has been advertised.
3. Games. The big sellers are coming but not out yet. Interesting to know when as no release dates have been given
4.The port problem. A lot of third parties are just straight ports from last gen consoles (that is right I called the PS3 and 360 last gen as we should be now with the PS4 and next xbox on the horizon) which a huge amount of people already own. You could link that with the poor third party sales on the Wii U as they just bought the 360 or PS3 version
5. The port problem brings nicely into the next generation problem. A lot of consumers are waiting and seeing what the other two are doing before jumping into one of the camps especially when these consumers have achievements and account specific content already tying them down. EA, recently, hasn't exactly said anything nice to help Nintendo.
The other problem is Nintendo's focus. With the Wii, Nintendo was so amped up to change gaming, to revolutionize the livingroom, to include everyone in gaming, to make gaming fun again. With the WiiU, there is none of that passion. They're just like "here is a console, with a tablet! Cool, huh? Buy it, please".
If that is not selling, then what is?
I do not understand this news.
from the looks, the name, and many other things bar the controller
thats make people think it;s just an overpriced wii with a tablet controllet
WiiU is genius.
Wii2 is boring and un original.
I don't know whether Nintendo's like Sony, where they have a range, and the Wii U is selling at the lower end of the range, but it seems that, according to Nintendo, the system isn't selling as they'd hoped.
And then there's the comparison to the Wii. I don't think it's doing as well compared to its predecessor, which isn't all that fair.

Well said! Nintendo wants the Apple crowd, not realizing that they never had a ghost of a chance to get them.
DS,wii,3DS lmao
Both outsold their competition.
Also, every Nintendo handheld ever, except Game Boy Micro.
Then who's gonna look at a Wii U ? not Mii, how bout U ?
People just like to jump over anything and don't look at the bigger picture. What people do see is the products that are selling the most are the ones who are picked up by the masses and not from a technical point of view. Look at HD TV's or Bluray. They had a slow start and are now becoming the norm. It was the same with MP3 players I had an MP3 player back in 1999 I think it was and it was a Diamond Multimedia Rio PMP300 and everyone told me it would never take off then a few years later everyone wanted an MP3 player in the IPod.
The WiiU has sold 3 million consoles in 3ish months and I don't think that is a bad number as it the 1st of the next gen and everyone is still enjoying there Wii, PS3 and 360 and waiting to see what the other two do before moving to there next console as there are still big name games Like COD, NFS ect still being made for the other consoles.
I have said since the beginning that I think next gen will not have a run away console as I see them all being more or less the same in terms of what they offer and they will be around about the same price to. It will be bought on who has what games that people want to play.
Also Nintendo has not had any of its big hitting names on the WiiU yet and the PS3 was the same when it came out once the Big names land sales will get higher to.
That's not true. There biggest hitting name Mario is on there. And it's a dam good Mario game too. And 2d Mario's sell a lot more than 3d ones. Whatever new super Mario bros u sells dont expect the 3d mario to sell more.
my guess is this is the only way for the so called gaming media to stay revelent i suppose.
personally i didn't purchase a Wii U yet not because i don't like nintendo (i actually do), its because it doesn't have the types of games important interested yet. so important holding off until i see a good list full of games that will make me want to plunk down my hard earned cash for the system.
(please note I'm not bashing the vita just making a point. Own both vita and wiiu but really don't see how either of these systems are failing. WiiU has a good sales foundation and vita has great games)
...Because whoever wanted one already has one. Next topic.
Metroid, F-Zero, Pilotwings, StarFox, MarioKart, Zelda
Gribble, where art thou my eccentric friend?
Jamal is right, we all know how far this site sways too. How many times have we seen the "media" is biased against sony and for some reason only the media wants to see sony fail?
At least here at my location, you could walk into any Target, Gamestop, Wal-Mart or Best Buy and purchase a Wii U Basic or Deluxe system for Christmas (and this was shortly after launch when the shelves were initially bare for a couple of weeks).
Stock at retail locations would vary since people were still buying the system, but it wasn't happening at a rapid pace. There were twice as many Wii U systems available at the beginning of January.
the 3 million sold is nintendo fans and no one else. Hardcore gamers outside nintendos grasp aren't sure its worth buying.
I always said that Wii's success was just luck and PS3 being 3rd place was just bad timing and high price. MS were the only one that did things right from the very beginning but then their direction went down the crapper after Kinect. The next gen console race is in Sony's hands now.
As a gamer who has played games since the Atari/Sega/NES days (yeah I am 41) over the years I have learned it is about the games. The Wii U does have more power than PS3, but its not going to have the power of PS4. Still it is capable of some cool things this gen could not pull off I guarantee you. If a Wii U game can look as good as the Last of Us how much better do you need your games to look? The tablet controller, if you are a "core" gamer gives you ways to play no other system can offer. I for one Really like the Wii U, and can not wait for PS4 (it is also said Dual Shock may not be the main controller PS4)
Also Nintendo has way more 1st party IPs than just Mario and Zelda. More of my Faves= Metroid,Eternal Darkness,Smash Bros, Bayonetta, Fatal Frame, Baiton Kaitos, Xenoblade, The Last Story, Donkey Kong I just thought that I would add those, as too many people just think of Mario and Zelda.
Its kinda like when people said the PS3 was doomed because the PS2 was outselling it shortly after its initial release date and PS3 numbers took a nosedive in January after having a stellar holiday season. I guess if people keep telling themselves the Wii U is dead and no one is buying it than it must be fact. Keep dreaming. People will say anything to get a few hits these days.
funny enough when the ps3 was not selling no one said it was because of the astronomical price etc, no one said Sony is going under, no one said they should go software only etc.
Too funny! what's worse, the other 2 companies lost more money and still not made much head way on profit for each machine sold lol.
Bias views are killing gaming. I think I need to switch off.
Gabe Newell: 'The PS3 is a Total Disaster'
http://www.1up.com/news/gab...
Zeon, some doom articles might be based on the financial articles that state that Nintendo has lost a ton of money because the Wii U isn't selling like they expected.
And the Wii U hardware is no slouch. While Xbox Next and PS4/Orbis will most definitely contain more powerful hardware, the Wii U will have reached its stride by the time this finally happens. Developers by then will be producing games that will look and play even better than first generation titles. And the Wii U has enough power to be considered 'next generation' despite the current argument.
I'm just not sure what the Wii U has to offer besides the old titles their fans like. If they had pushed the tech, I would be interested. But they didn't. They got away with that before, won't again. I think their business model is outdated. Unless they are aiming for kids to create a future Mario fanbase. In that case, $300-50 was the wrong pricepoint.
Let's not forget the Nintendo Wii and its lack of third-pary support on launch day. Gamers had to wait months (and sometimes years) for first-party releases. Most 3rd party titles never saw the light of day on the Wii because of its limited capabilities, but we're seeing the opposite with the Wii U because it is capable of handling graphic intensive games. And, yes - I agree that Xbox Next and PS4/Orbis will eventually surpass the Wii U in time.
But the Wii U sold 3 million units in 2 months almost. I dont think thats bad for a game that really hasnt got many appealing games. I mean the Vita only has 4 million salesl after a year and I know we're comparing 2 consoles that are very different but I dont think theyre really doing that bad. They're going to release SSB mario 3D and Mario Kart and everyone will own one so I think we need to STFU about it's sales right now.
How da Hell is 3 million in less than TWO months mean it "isn't selling" ??? WTF?
Wii U - like wii gimmicky console only high def
However, that solution is perhaps proving to be a mayor problem for the WiiU, becasue I think many would be buyers are in the fence waiting for the immediate price drop.
I think they probably overestimated how the games they launched with would push the console. They needed Zelda or something like a 3D Mario game to push people into wanting one. Third party games that were already out on other systems weren't going to do it. Honestly I've never bought a Nintendo system with third party games in mind, it's always first party, not saying there is never any good third party games, just I prefer Nintendo's first party games.
I think once we see the next Zelda, Mario, Mark Kart, Metroid and Smash Bro's, people will buy one. I own one, and I own one because I see potential. I hardly think we can consider this the end of the console or the end of Nintendo, it's not like its been on the market for over a year and is under 3 million, that would be cause for concern.
