Games make kids fat murderers; oh wait, they've been around for 40 years

MMGN: According to (normally old) people who like to worry and point the finger at devilish technologies they don’t understand, video games are responsible for breeding a generation of mass murdering teenagers and morbidly obese children that will never fit into a wetsuit.

Why are games blamed for making kids fat and the behaviour of murderers now, when they’ve been around for the past 40 years? (Culture)

Great title.

The more things change the more things stay the same.

While I don't think one thing is a direct 1:1 correlation. I think you could make a bit of a case for games contributing greatly to obesity in the recent past. Look at the trend in the US: http://www.rand.org/health/...

Video games while around for a long time were never as popular as they are today and certainly not as popular with adults as they are today. The kids that played games 40-30yrs ago are now adults and you can see in the trend above...obessity is on the climb.

Sure it doesnt paint the whole picture...activity, other forms of entertainment, diet ... ALL of that is part of the issue. kids who play a ton of games and little outside activity are most certainly going to skew on the obesse side.
