Must have something to do with the whole 'not being official' thing and not having to answer to anyone.
It's a website with no affiliation or people to answer to. They could say the Vita has sold 100 million and nothing would happen. No one would believe them but they answer to no one. They're not an official source.
They ignore MS and Sony shipped #s, and make the foolish assumption that retailers are so dumb as to keep a whole load of spare PS3s in some warehouse somewhere, and keep ordering them.
The truth is that the sold numbers are within less than 1 million of the shipped numbers, at all times, because retailers know what they're doing. The only time they ever stockpile consoles is around the holidays. Even then, if they do overstock, they dump extras almost immediately after the holidays, in sales.
Retail space == $$. They don't waste it with stockpiling when they don't see it as impending profit, relative to other warehouse and floor space. VGChartz somehow always assumes that (a) retailers are stupid, and (b) ignores shipped numbers, reported to stockholders as %100 truth by the 1st parties, that don't match their totals.
The PS3 is ahead of the 360 by about 1 million units, in both shipped, and the hands of the consumer. This is a simple truth of large scale economics. Shipped numbers are effectively sold numbers, with a small padding. Retailers are NOT so dumb as to pad 3 million PS3s, imbalanced with only 0.5 million 360s, when the sales #s are nowhere near that amount of disparity.
They ignore MS and Sony shipped #s, and make the foolish assumption that retailers are so dumb as to keep a whole load of spare PS3s in some warehouse somewhere, and keep ordering them.
keep it up.
Microsoft reported 76m 360s were shipped by December 31st.
VGC has 360 at 73.5m by that time...
What a joke of website, this site should not be aprroved here by any means, if a shame mods let this come so fat.
Site like this are banned on Neogaf by obvious reasons.
If we want N4G to be respetable it needs to start banning this sites.
Just saying. Its not only 360 numbers that are way off... Ps3 numbers and undertracked as hell aswell.
Peace.
Second, there are not multiple millions of consoles in inventory at various retailers around the United states, or even the world. A quick survey of retailers in the US would suggest at most there are a couple hundred thousand, Double that if you count Europe. (treble that if you count japan and the PS3) and not millions.
WTF, why would retailers have more in stock than they sell in a given week, or even month? Or a couple of months...
That is not how retail works. Here in 2013, retail is all about sitting on as little inventory as possible, all the time.
If Microsoft said 76 million, then you can count on 76 million consoles sold at retail give or take 2 weeks.
PERIOD.
vgchartz numberz are fake fake fake. They don't mean anything.
But, if you wish to believe they're sold then by all means do so. That's 77 million PS3 sold. Not bad eh?
MS said 75.9 shipped but vgchartz is an estimation sales. Their web site is not official but it makes sense that the sales are under shippement.
I'm waiting on official numbers.
To think SONY expected the Vita to outsell the psp this fiscal year.
You spend a lot of time calling me a fanboy, then come out trolling like there's no tomorrow. There's some serious irony there.
Oh, wait. Are you still holding a grudge because Tretton "insulted" you?
Self-respecting, indeed.
Both are however related to the article. Allow me to rephrase for you.
I have made 2 observations after reading this article
1 3DS has sold almost a million
2 PSP is outselling the Vita despite SONY expecting the opposite.
If I really wanted to be a trolling fanboy I could have easily mention how many times more the 3DS was selling compared to the VITA, I however did not.
They were 2 sentences. Did you really need the guy to create a new paragraph for the second observation, solely for your reading pleasure?
Microsoft just brings up the rear as usual.
Edit: On the handheld side - holy crap the 3DS is getting insane numbers!
Years?
Three or more?
Anyone think?
They do have longer legs, theoretically than the previous era, but it all depends on their respective creators to maintain that longevity.
Online service termination would effectively be the real nail in the coffin I believe, as online functionality is really the lifeblood of consoles these days.
Guess we will find out.
Or will they be priced effectively enough to appeal to both early adopters and those who are still content with their current machine, or are otherwise strapped for cash.
If you enjoy time away from them, you wouldn't be on this site.
Your statement would be true if you were going off the assumption that I am on this site for hours at a time. However, I only go on for 5-10 minutes in the morning and at night to see what's new with the games I play. Also, I only go on N4G when I'm at home.
Vita is a portable console designed for playing on the move when you don't have a tv/monitor at your current location. For me, home time is game time. When I'm out it's not game time again, it's outside world time.
In that case, you wouldn't buy a 3DS either...
That's true, I don't own any portable gaming consoles.
If your point was about how Nintendo manages to sell more, then my only guess is that they've done something better than competitors. Either that or people like the Nintendo name for their portables.
All I see is people saying "bleh bleh bleh I don't play my vita" how many games have you got? "uh.. 2" Fantastic.
I've got like 15 games for my vita all store bought I love playing it and also have trouble choosing what to play. Its damn good.
I had more 3DS games than that but have promptly sold all of them bar Ocarina of time, it is now my portable N64.
It id mathematically impossible for PS3 to continually outsell the 360 at a rate which surpasses 360 lifetime sales, and somehow stay static on their charts.
Yes I know it's VG charts and all, but am I the only one who sees this as simply childish behavior in an attemot to refuse to show PS3 has surpassed the 360?
