If the PS3 version is inferior here in 2008 then it's a sign that probably the game isn't that good anyway. DMC4, Burnout, COD4 all are solid games for both 360 and PS3. Denied Ops definitively better on 360 is a bad game. So if the developer isn't good enough to make a PS3 port then they don't have what it takes to make a good game.

I really think they should be proud of themselves, I think all devs that make a game on the ps3 that runs well should be proud of themselves. Ecspecially if it's a devs first title on the ps3 it must be very challenging.

I have a lot more respect for a developer that makes a game on the ps3 than one that doesn't. Unless they 're a first party or exclusive to another console of course.

The problem is that some developers are having problems with PS3 and some are not. The PS3 is different than X360 simply put. The "one is better" argument will go on forever regardless because sadly that's part of what a fan war is. The key though is that some developers don't want to understand the architecture of the PS3. I admit the X360 is easier to develop a game on because its not that complex (I said complex not powerful fyi, that isn't what this reply is about). Developers like Naughty Dog and Insomniac to name a couple have spent a bit of time learning the PS3 and they are showing that its not that difficult just has a bit of a learning curve. Insomniac and Sony recently put out new kits to help other developers out so this issue will begin to die hopefully.

X360 also is entering its 3rd year and PS3 is entering its 2nd in development generations. Long and short is that some of us are not trying to say what a developer can and cannot do, but more that its a matter of questioning their drive to make things work in light of some developers obviously showing that developing great games (Uncharted for example) on the PS3 is very doable.

These guys arent going to burn up budget just to get the PS3 version up to snuff. The attach rates and install base makes the Xbox 360 the preferred market, they cant afford to deliver a game gimped-to-the-PS3 to the Xbox 360 market. They might as well not even bother making the game at all.

When run on the PS3 since you're moving code built for 3 PowerPC cores onto just 1 Power PC cores, but leaving the 7 SPU cores completely unused. That's just one issue; the other is that HLSL and CG are entirely different shading languages that are not cross-compatible (GPU side of things).

360 Development Kits were completed and shipped out about a year earlier than PS3 Development Kits, so it's obvious that most developers took advantage of this lead time to start their 360 engines first. Unfortunately, they learned in due time that porting from 360 to PS3 is damn near impossible unless the engine is built from scratch. Porting from PS3 to 360 is easier, but not easy.

The moral of the story is that custom engines have to be built for both platforms, and in tandem with each other. Devil May Cry, Burnout Paradise, and Call of Duty 4 are great examples of this.

If you want to get technical, Final 360 development kits were sent out in August 2006, and Final PS3 development kits were sent out in June 2007. The 360 CPU and GPU were finalized pretty early on in 2006, while the PS3 GPU, RSX, wasn't even finalized until May 2007, which is what held back the system's release. Blu-ray drives were also hard to come by at the time.

There is no way that they are only using 1 spe of the cell. Absolutely no chance of that. Considering the PS3 has an older GPU then the 360 and data moves to and from its cpu at the same speed as the 360's (3.2 ghz). If they only used one spe in the cell the game most likely wouldn't run at all. Keep in mind the pentium 3 is a multicore processor - it has 3 chips in it, most likely if they port a game over it will be using at the very least 3 spe's, as well as 1-2 more spe's just to take over the calculations that the ps3's gpu cannot handle compared to the 360's gpu.

The cell is a good chip, but some of you guys act like it was a direct creation of god. The trouble with it is that software has to be built for it specifically. And that is not going to be happening this generation, with the exception of a few exclusives. If it was so great I am sure sony wouldn't be ditching it:

Its not just one developer that has had troubles porting to it, most likely the toolset sony provides them is overly complicated. Which is a sad thing, since regardless of the ps3's technology, the majority of 3rd party games will most likely look and play better on the 360 as they have been for years to come. That included with the 360's exclusives/xbox live service make the 360 a much better buy for gaming.. of course ps3 always has blueray to watch movies.

LOL, that article is from last November.

Only developers know how their code ports from one to another. From the devs mouth it is difficult to port PC/360 code to the PS3 and 'most' find it easier to port from the PS3 to the 360. Don't pretend like you know why and that the toolset or architecture is too difficult to learn. They said the same thing when comparing 1st gen PS2 games to 2-3rd gen DC games.

you r wrong. What it means is they developed the game for the 360. "Problems at the end" were porting issues to the PS3 after the 360 development was over. At first it didn't perform as well as 360 because it was developed for 360 and PS3 is different. But once they figured PS3 out they realized that they could have done so much more with the game had they developed for PS3.

By the end of the year, 12/31/08, the PS3 will make 360 look like toy. Sorry to be one to tell you the truth. Truth hurts.

Honestly I dont understand why these games aren't running BETTER on PS3. I mean, Burnout Paradise is a great example of a game that was developed on PS3 and turned out better on both consoles. Why don't other devs do that? Infinity Ward hired an entire new team for the PS3 version.

You really do need two separate teams when doing PS3 and 360 development simultaneously, which means twice as much monetary investment and almost double the staff.

Back in the PS2/Xbox days, multiplatform development only increased costs by around 30~40%. Now multiplatform development increases costs by 100%. PS3's got more juice in it, but requires a Completely different programming paradigm, something that a lot of developers didn't really prepare for. PS2 devs definitely had an easier time though since the PS3 isn't too different. Both platforms are multi-core, use similar instruction sets, DMA, etc, etc.

Guess I was wrong. But i was sure I read plenty of articles that spoke of this game being one of the only multiplats (for it's started dev. time) to be PS3 designed, and 360 ported.

Guess I'll wait for the reviews to see if there are any distinguishable differences between the two (as far as frame rates, pop up and other). I hope the PS3 version runs (at least) as good as the 360 version, as it is a game that I will prefer the DS3 for.

This is precisely why Microsoft concentrated on making the development tools work for the benefit of the Development team. To enable them to spend their time and money making the best *GAME* they can, without having to jump through hoops.

In industry this is called a "Deliverable". For instance, as an auto buyer, do you *care* if the metal-stamping machine was newly painted purple? No. Why? Because that is not relevant to the DELIVERABLE.

Users want to see the developers spending money directly on the Deliverable. Not painting their desks, or wasting money on nonsense.

Time and Time again we've seen when the rubber-hits-the-road, the Xbox 360 is a better system.

The Exclusives are better. The mutli-plats are better. Reviews show it. Awards show it. The market shows it.

It is all about DELIVERING and the Xbox 360 was designed to do that.

IdTech begs to differ. Rage is being dumbed down on the PS3 compared to the PC and 360 versions, and actually delayed both the PC and 360 versions as well as itself because of the limits of the system (namely split memory, and no, there aren't many good ways to work around split memory other than huge install files). Considering their engine is easily portable to all three platforms (360, PS3, and PC), it being worse on their platform says a lot.

You post dribble like this and then expect people to treat you with respect? You cannot define logic by yourself to begin with, just because Mr. Marbles calls it logic doesn't make it logic. You declare PS3 is an inferior gaming platform which is inaccurate and for every link you provide to say your version is correct I can find an equal number showing that many developers feel PS3 is more powerful. Personally I don't care but stop pretending you can dispense trash talk as logic.

As to the this is a sign of inferiority, wrong or at least not entirely accurate logic again. Assuming the starting base of System A being less complex to program for (X360 in this little example) and System B being more complex to program for (PS3 in this example), then logic would dictate that it would be easier to make a game on System A than System B. You and I both agree on that I believe. Now your flaw comes in because you pretend that more complex means inferior, which it doesn't necessarily, it just means more complex, nothing more. Yes, as we've discussed and agreed, using PC hardware to make a games console meant that everyone could program a 360 from the start and the tools set was well developed.Good move.
Those developers that try harder and dedicate some effort to it, come up to speed on a completely new architecture - those that rely on well used routines and older toolsets will struggle. It really is that simple.

Can't see that this story is here for any other reason than giving the usual trolls an excuse to dust off the same tired arguments they always do. Of particular note, are the 'armchair developers' who simply write a bit of tech babble they copied from a forum and would have us believe they have any knowledge of developing games. PS3 - Difficult to program for. But as others keep stating and they are right, it's new tech. It takes time. It is far more advanced than the 360. Just look at Uncharted, and Heavenly swoard, these are early gen games. How much better at late gen games in all of gaming history. NES (example Mario 1 - Mario 3 SNES- Super Mario World- Donkey Kong Country. The most current example would have to be any early PS2 GTA 3 and SA - Bully. Think about it.

360- Rushed, flawed 16% fail rate. Non up gradable, out dated tech. But has many fine games. I believe it is tapped out graphicaly or close to.

Star Wars Force Unleashed 2 is going to use PS3 as lead as an example; useing PS3 as the standard so they're not trying to squeeze power from the PS3 to match the 360 PS3 clearly struggles with. PS3 does a few things really well and the 360 does everything well.

Lost Planet PS3 issues isn't just because of LP being a port LP has stunning visuals with tons of action. The special effects are still advanced to this day. The limited destructible environments and lossless Multi player meaning: in vs matches the graphical quality is the same as single player with all kinds of Mechs and weapons and almost Gow like detail at times its easy to see why PS3 is out of breath like a 300 pound man running a block.

the X Box 360 fanboys had a hard day, what with all the great PS3 news hitting N4G throughout the day, and they had to dredge up a story about a game, from what i can tell from the latest gameplay videos, isn't really looking very interesting ( i was *PUMPED about Dark Sector until i saw the gameplay videos, then it dropped down to a "meh." if the story is excellent, then i'll give it shot) in order to re-inflate their frail egos. by the way, i'm referring to the 360 *FANBOYS, not the X Box 360 fans that have a head on their shoulders and enjoy their console, but not to insanely fanatical levels, and, *gasp*, actually *TRY out the other consoles before making a judgment on them.

if the 360 version of Dark Sector is better than the PS3 version, no worries, i'll pick it up for my 360; the benefit of not being a douchebag fanboy is that your head is out of your @SS long enough to enjoy what *ALL the consoles have to offer. for me, i get the best of both worlds. if a PS3 version of a game is better, i get the PS3 version, and vice versa. it works *SURPRISINGLY WELL.

despite my reservations, i'm still willing to give Dark Sector a shot, even though it does look a lot like a Resident Evil/Gears of War clone, but then again, why is that a *BAD thing? it might be fun, but the gameplay videos probably don't do the game justice. i'll get some hands on time before i make my final declarations, but there are other games coming out that have my interest piqued just a bit more than Dark Sector at the moment.

The FACT is some will never agree some devs, especially being their first games for the PS3 does not have the pedigree as some major 1st-party developers, that usually get strong backing from Sony.

Either way you look at it, the 360 still has better support/tools. Games are produced faster with its architect very close to the PC's, this was MS strategy in the making. Sony went the other way.

Not all devs created Equal. If the 360 was not around to compare, you would just take you PS3 games, as it is. Some probably would not notice the little technicalities, if it was the Wii next to a PS3.

the ease of development is now a handicap. The 360 is being looked at as simple or something just because M$ made it easy to develop for. That's a load of garbage, and you all know that. It's more or less a cop-out. The 360 is still a tri-cored processor that can dual thread into having 6 theoretical cores. It has a revolutionary gpu that has a unified architecture and can do some insane shading production numbers, but yet it's being knocked.

Why can't people appreciate all the tech that's in the 360, and the fact that M$ made it easier for developers to grasp hold of it a lot sooner. I Mean it's not all good because in my opinion they are really not taking advantage of the complexity of the processor, and i heard that multi-threading is not easy ( i think Valve was complaining about that.) So 360 games can be (in my opinion) pushed further if developers took more time to dig deeper than the surface of it's available technology.

And don't think i'm knockin the PS3, but complexity doesn't always mean better. Like someone stated previously, you can have all the horsepower in the world, but if you don't have the means to getting that to the ground, then you'll be going nowhere. Very profound statement. But I actually do think there is an advantage to going PS3 first, it then makes developers look at the muti-threading for the 360 also. The do need to be shaken up a little bit, and to try more varied techniques, because i still don't think it's being pushed hard.

They are both great consoles, but it's like people are putting down the 360 because it's easier to develop for. That makes no sense to me.... Just sayin....

The PS3 is @ss backwards, I remember when mechanics would not work on a lot of the Renaults, a French import back in the 80s, the car was designed in a half @ssed backwards fasion, they didn't avoid it because they were lazy, mechs avoided it because it took too long to work on and was too much trouble, they made no dam money on them! This is the problem with the PS3, it breaks industry rules, it makes it hard to make money designing games for it. The PS3 is crap, and were it not for the PS2 and its 100million user base, the PS3 would have been abandoned a long time ago by developers, and we would be living in a 2 console scenerio. Yes, that is all Sony's fault and anybody who trys to deny that is just blind to the issue. And you wanna talk about A$$backwards, you mean like a Unified memory architecture, when was the last time you heard of that being used on a PC game or high-end application?

The reason many PC's stop using it a long time ago is because it hampers performance in some way. Allot to much for Graphics and everything else in the game suffers to some degree, same issue if you use to much for the performance of the game (A.I., Scripting, etc) then graphics takes a hit. Yes MS gave developers a machine that puts out some pretty pictures, but I play games not pictures. A great looking game means nothing without solid gameplay. But I have to hand it to MS their hardware is not the best, but their software rules supreme and that is why many developers like them because they make it so easy and in a industry where time and money are easily lost many developers look for the straightest path.

And to all the people who will disagree with my comment and will say Gears and Halo, Cod4, I am not denying that those games represent some of the finest gaming, but if you take a look at their design, you will notice the while these games are great looking and playing games, they lack the scope that we should expect from a next-gen game. Of course many developers have found ways around this with IW's CoD4 being the best example of what can be done outside of gameplay. But games like those are to far and in-between.

On a second note. The reason many multiplat games look better on the 360 and many times run better has nothing to do with Cell Vs. Xenon. Both CPU's are very capable and only exclusive games will ever play to what those CPUs can do. It all lies within the way memory is used. Both Systems have 512mb (we won't take into account OS and many other things that run in the background) But the 360 is free to use the 512 in any way it sees fit. If a developer wants to use 400mb of the ram for graphics they are free to do so. But when translating that to the PS3 which has a split memory, many developers have already overshot that for the sake of graphics. No matter how much coding and disguising you do you are never gonna fit 2 gallons of water in a 1 gallon jug.

That is why many people have stated coding for the PS3 will only make 3rd party titles better. The PS3 can't use more then 256mb for graphics the 360 can. So lets say a developer's finished game on the PS3 only uses 480mb of ram, that leaves that developer with 32mb of ram to play with on the 360 which they can use to make the graphics better or up the resolution a little or some sort of extra shine. At the point I really wouldnt care nor should any true gamer cause it will be cosmetic at best, as long as both games perform the same thats all I care about.
