Nintendo: The Problem With Direct Videos

WC writes: Within the last couple of weeks we’ve had two Nintendo Direct videos online detailing new Pokemon games in the form of Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, and then a huge wave of Wii U news, detailing the likes of The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD remake and Wii U Virtual Console plans. Both videos sparked a lot of interest and excitement with the games and services announced.

In years gone by we would have to wait for E3, Nintendo Space World or other similar events for new announcements, but with the net taking over everything as it is Nintendo has got with the times now showcases a lot of its new content first through Nintendo Direct videos. So what’s wrong with Nintendo Direct videos? Well a lot. That’s not to say they aren’t useful, exciting and informative, but there’s a lot wrong with them, and they could see vast improvement. (Nintendo, Wii U)

I like Nintendo Direct. It is no different than say a Nintendo Magazine.

I would have thought it was at least a little better because you get to see employees of Nintendo speaking to you as well as game footage being played during the conferences.

I Like Nintendo Directs-

Over the decades Nintendo used to be very, very secretive - so secretive that spies could have learned from them-

I like the fact that they are announcing and showing what they can- and if they can't they explain their reasons- and they usually give an ETA for what they will show-off.

Iwata has evolved a totally different take on being a CEO and a company. In a way, he is being a more accessible Steve Jobs.

Makes it seem like he is trying and is Working to please his customers- and not with the lofty-screw-you-peasant attitude.

Wow these "journalists" look like know a lot about game industry and how to save A ou B.

News sites such as GT, IGN, Magazines and journalist hate Nintendo Directs because it cuts them out of the picture completely. Only for them to be able to give their reaction opinion on what took place.(which even the YouTube community does a better job at now.) In the past, companies like Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft would have blocked off interview time with one of the major publications to get this kind of info out to the masses. Now they just use social media, without bothering with what could seem to be a biased middle man. Some people would attest that well having someone ask the hard questions in person can put good pressure on these companies to tell us what we want to hear(Geoff Keighley w/Reggie interviews stick out the most in my mind). But in all honesty, social media is a two way street to not only get information to the fans. But for them to use as a quality control method as well. Hence Iwata addressing WiiU owners concerns with the system personally and the timeline of plans to fix such issues. On both ends it builds up a level of trust, from the gaming community and from the company. There's something personal about when the president of a company can come out and talk with the community directly to share its commitment to do things better, its flaws and its great exciting news all in one video...
