Saying Ni no Kuni Is "Kiddie" Is Just Stupid...Wait, Is It Really?

Anybody who claims Ni no Kuni is "kiddie" is immediately branded a dumb casual gamer moron who "can't appreciate" greatness. It's insulting. (Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, PS3)

It is a little "kiddie" I suppose. However, that's what Miyazaki's work always entails. Every one of Studio Ghibli's movies (that I can think of) have young protagonists. Doesn't stop them from being amazing though.

How dare you! There is a world of difference between 'kiddie' (childish) and 'Childlike'. The appeal of Ghibli is the subtext. Whilst they appear childlike on the surface, there is always something lurking beneath the narrative that speaks to the wiser audience. In this case we have a kid who can use magic to defeat the enemies in the world, whilst beneath we have a grieving child fighting for the love of his mother. Story/Theme/character/motive = plot.

Edit: Snookie12: J/K :)

I only used the word "kiddie" because it was used in the article though. I wasn't insinuating anything by it, as I'm sure you can tell by my comment I am a fan of Ghibli's work.

I don't think having a whimsical childlike appeal is a bad thing. Look at Pokemon or Kingdom Hearts. This isn't made for kids, it's made for anyone who loves fantasy and Ghibli films. I think if someone tries to discredit this game because of their own insecurities, they are immature and therefore kiddie in their own right.

LOL. Snookie12 is one of the coolest people on N4G and I know that he wasn't engaging with the sentiments you described, but I have to say, that's one hell of an observation and the reason I think you'll appreciate this JRPG :)
