This Generation’s Villains That Are Too Hard to Hate

Brodie from DC writes: Sometimes, it’s just good to be bad. I’m one who constantly finds himself on the darker side of the line, often preferring beautifully written villains to the moral knights that strut through the battlefield, emerging from the dust and debris with the princess under one arm. These are just some of the generation’s villains just too hard to hate. The ones you can’t help but love. (PC, PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360)

To me, that's why there hasn't really been any good villains this gen. I want to DESPISE the villain and be afraid of him/her/it. You can relate to a villain without having to like the villain.

I'm not so rigid. I think the only thing you need to have a good villain is simply to have a well-characterized villain. Every character should be a fully realized, three-dimensional person--the villain most especially.

I would, however, agree with the sentiment that their really hasn't been any great villain this generation.

I mean, hell, I've played virtually all of the games worth playing this generation--and then some--and as I sit here, I remember the name of a single antagonist.

But, hell, I can remember names like Marcello, or Jon Irenicus, at the drop of a hat. THOSE were great villains.

Sephiroth comes to mind for me. Everything he did to Cloud was just...heartbreaking. Of course I would do the same if I found out my whole life was a lie.

Illusive Man is probably the best villain this gen.

Every character should be fully realized, you are 100% correct.
