Backlog Reviews – Dark Souls – You’ll Die and You’ll Like it… Mostly.

Miss a game the first time around? So did we. Find out which games are worth going back for with Backlog Reviews when the newest releases squeeze your wallet too tight. This time around, Dark Souls for Xbox 360 got a look. (Dark Souls, Xbox 360) 3.5/5

I get why people like Dark Souls, I really do, but I honestly grew to hate it. Maybe I'm just a baby but dying all the time and backtracking to where you died just to die again grows tiresome and annoying. My friend and I have since dubbed it Dark Trolls, seeing how the game essentially trolls you from start to finish.

It's just not for me I guess, to everyone that likes it kudos to you and I'm glad you had fun. :)

I think Dark Souls had a few cheaper moments than Demon's Souls. Like those frog thing that cursed you and continually cut your health in half every time you were cursed and then if you didn't buy the gems to cure the curse (which you probably didn't because earlier in the game your souls were about as rare as finding a good reality TV show) you'd have to go to the ruins and fight your way past the ghosts which would float through walls and could kill you quite easily when you had a full, complete health bar!

Sure it can be done, kind of like the way you can bite your own thumb off. It'll be painful and it takes grim determination and you need to be a bit of sadist full of self loathing. But it can be done.

Still, I think the difficulty makes it amazing, it's a stand out game but, as I said, I felt Dark Souls could, occasionally, be cheaper than Demon's Souls.

Dark Souls had some times where it basically forced you to die. I felt that Demon's Souls was more fair and more skill based overall. Remember the treasure chest that eats you in Dark Souls? That just pissed me off. There was absolutely no way I could have known that would happen, and there was no way out, once you selected open, you were dead.

Its not just you. Theres quite a lot of ppl who hate Dark Souls for the same reason. All my friends do and quite a few worst game lists well one on n4g forums too actually :D

Anyways Dark Souls was a very important game in my life because it made me realize how precious time is.

About to dive into this once I finish Dead Space 2 and maybe some demos like MGR:R. I promised myself to play one game at a time to wipe out my backlog but more and more keep coming out... anyway, I don't know if I can keep that promise. I know someone who put something like 670 hours into Dark Souls. I think I'll have to take a break with The Unfinished Swan or something. I am not great with dying all the time and repeating. God, Dark Souls is daunting. Not sure if I can do it.

Ya I get why people don't like them. But the souls series is my favorite of this whole gen.

Played Dark Souls, I really liked it, I'm a sucker for atmosphere and this game had ATMOSPHERE. My fave memories of it were going through Blight town without dying after I got to the first bonfire (died twice at entrance cuz of poison darts) including Queelag (summoned my first online partner and whooped her a**).

Second was Tomb of Giants, I died so many times and hated it but felt so satisfied when I killed Nito. I always died because I was so scared of him and was running more than fighting, eventually I stepped up and killed him and all his Skeleton Giants on the other side of the room and the happiness I felt of finally leaving that evil place hasn't been replicated since.

I think the common misconception about this game is that its fun to die. Not once when I died was I like "F*ck yeah, that was awesome" but its the feeling of getting better at the game and finally beating a boss and getting through an area that you were stuck on forever that is so rewarding. Plus like I said the atmosphere is SO GOOD.

I just got a PS3 and I'm gonna buy Demon Souls the second I find it.

".... Not once when I died was I like "F*ck yeah, that was awesome..."

That thought made me laugh, thanks!

I love Dark Souls :D

Sure it's tough, but finding the solutions to problems is all part of the fun.

Cursed and can't find a purging stone? Trade a cracked red eye orb with the Crow girl and get 2 :)
