This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things: A Deeper Look at DLC, Free To Play and Microtransactions
DLC, free-to-play games, and microtransactions should be good things, but too often they go horribly wrong.
(Dead Space 3, Industry, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
DLC i have no problems with (for the most part... unless it's just a 100kb file to unlock content already on the disc), but free-to-play has always seemed like a red herring to me because you pretty much have to pay if you want to play the full game.
It annoys me how EA will find any way possible to stick DLC into there games whether it benefits the game or not. You just know the first thing they spoke about when making Dead Space 3 was how can we include DLC and we need co op in this game to sell more.
DLC would work a lot better if the game was not released yearly. Getting a sequel every 3-4 years will benefit dlc content. Is like with pc gaming, the sequels do not get released often due to dlc and updates i.e. counter strike, diablo 3, etc. The rest (free to play and microtransactions) were well explained in this article.

Also, the excuse for it not being split screen, is that it would ruin the immersion. That's probably because of the Online Pass.
With that said, DS3 seems to become another microtransaction game like ME3 did.
