PlayStation 4 - Everything we know about the upcoming Sony hardware.

There is no point in hiding it, we all know it’s coming, the next generation of gaming hardware is without a doubt an inevitability and this week I thought it would be a perfect time to take a look at everything we know about the next generation hardware from Sony. Sure nothing has been "confirmed" from the bosses at Sony, but there comes a time prior to the announcement and launch of any major product that the rumours start to live a life of their own, as they say "there is no smoke without fire". Sounds like Sony is bringing one very nice hardcore gaming console once again. Keeping the blu-ray or something different? Which would also ask if PS3 games will work on it.

PS3 games working on the PS4 will be determined by how well the rumoured hardware infrastructure can emulate the CELL processor. If it can't, than PS3 BC is going to be really difficult.

There was a rumoured once that some USB dongle could aid in the BC of PS3 (maybe even PS2) games, so we will just have to see how Sony goes about it.

After hearing about the "Spurs Engine" from "Joerc" (I believe thats his/her username) I understand that its actually inspired by the same architecture from the same Cell tech found in the PS3...

And it was made in the same Cell manufacturing plant/facility that Toshiba sold to Sony ...

Toshiba:Makes Spurs Engine, Spurs Engine inspired by Cell architecture...

Toshiba: Sales Cell manufacturing plant to Sony...

Sony: May have added this Spurs Engine or may have created a Cell/Spurs derivative and added onto their next console, seeing that there was an unknown calculating unit onboard(I remember reading, that somewhere else)...

So my guess is that, backwards capatibility for PS3 games will be no problem for the next PS system, with this Spurs unit, and dedicated gpu with the added benefit of super fast RAM which happens to be plentiful, based on the rumored specs provided about this unannounced beast...

But then again, its a crazy thought/theory I formulated so far...

Too much support has gone into the blu-ray format, no way they'll drop it. 100GB+ discs incoming. ;)

Well Blu-ray is a fairly future proof format, it only requires minor tweaks (in some cases only to firmware on certain devices) to be able to read 100GB - 200GB discs, so I see no reason why Sony would abandon the format they've invested so heavily in, especially given the impending release of "mastered in 4K bluray" and the uptake of the format.

Backwards compatability I doubt will exsist given the different architecture of the GPU / CPU, sony investing heavily in GaiKai and the fact that "HD" re-releases prove so financially tasty to developers.

Ok HD remakes may not sound much when the source was HD already but rarely are todays games 60FPS@1080 and that would certainly be a big market in the coming years for todays top games.

Good reply, which kind of makes one wonder the Trophies? Do they end with the PS3 and start over with the PS4?

This story should have been approved hours ago.

Thank you for the vote of confidence :)

Sony isn't about to abandon trophies, especially since they have a home on the Vita. I'd imagine old trophys would act like a hall of fame. Much like when Xbox Live switched from one xbox to the other, people will keep their accounts in one form or another.

What's funny is that we know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Every single article that has "here's what we know" then proceeds to write paragraph after paragraph of lies. No one but Sony knows anything, so stop posting these articles as though they contain any facts at all when they don't.

They're all leeching off the same speculation (or misinformation) which normally comes from one or two sources providing us with rumors. I don't think anyone actually believes any of it as factual. One would hope not, at least.

Hardware excluded, Sony has a real chance to show something special. I just feel it in my bones that a few stellar first party studios are working on some AAA launch titles. I honestly think Sony's learnt from their past mistakes and has been humbled to level with gamers. They're going for the jugular this time around.

The news on PS4/Xbox 720 is great.
One thing though that I hope gets addressed is whether our profiles that we use on PSN/XBL will be transferred over to the new systems.
Some of us have put a lot of work into building up our profiles whether it be collecting trophies/achievements, keeping the gamer name we like and ranking up using that name.
I would be pissed off if I had to restart a new profile over from scratch and not use the same one I use now to progress more.
Hopefully everyone feels the same or is curious like I am about my concern?

I can't imagine PSN (SEN) being completely reset. Playstation Network information from PS3 transferred to Vita (and vice versa), so I feel pretty confident that they will continue keeping PSN universal.

I just can't wait for the Sony is doomed articles!

You wont have to wait long for them to show up especially after the amount of hype that the Nintendo direct event created.

I get that the ram is faster, but why just go with 4gb GDDR5? Why not go with 6gb and dump 1gb to the o.s. 512mb just doesn't do it anymore and i strongly feel the next system is going to need atleast 1 or 2 gigs in the o.s for future proofing.

I'm interested to see what they do with Gaikai and PS4.
