Nintendo, Why Not Put DS Games On Wii U's eShop?

Something I have been mulling over the past few weeks (mostly as I stared longingly at the meagre collection of eShop games) is the possibility of making DS games available on the Wii U via the Virtual Console. This wouldn’t have been possible on the Wii due to a lack of dual screens and touch controls, but that would all be negated now that the GamePad exists. The more I think about it, the more I can't think of any reason not to: why not make the best of Nintendo’s vast library of DS games available on the Wii U eShop? (Nintendo, Wii U)

Because they're horrifically low res ? Would need to sort that out. they look cute on a small DS screen , but on a 42'' 1080p tv I'm guessing things might get a bit nasty.

Then again , Gameboy player looked awesome on your TV. But that's because Sprite GBA graphics are cleaner than 3D DS graphics.

I would play it though lol. Give me some Pokemon Conquest for my TV.

I dunno dude, I don't think that's such a bad idea. Of course I'd rather they start with some 3DS game compatibility first and then add DS games to the eShop if they simply must.

GBA (160 vertical lines) games looked passable on 480i/576i CRT TVs, which is a huge difference to putting NDS games (190ish vertical lines) on 1080p LED/LCD TVs.

I only find it doable if one could only play the games on Gamepad.

I've spent a lot of time playing Virtual Console games on an HDTV, and while it doesn't look great it's not exactly game breaking.

However, I do think it would be a better move by Nintendo to add them to the 3DS eShop instead and give the Wii U Gamecube games. I mean, there's already full retail games on the eShop, so why not put games from previous generations on there too? It's better than doing nothing at all with those games.

I agree with this. DS games on the 3DS eShop is a great idea. They could throw gba games on there too while they're at it.

Couldn't they give the games graphical updates?

That was hardware emulation, this would be software emulation. Meaning the games could easily be upscaled to 1080p like all VC games.

I personally think Nintendo merging their hand held and home video game division is because in five years there will be no difference between your hand held and your home video game console because they'll be one in the same. I think the WiiU is an indicator of just that. A hand held like apparatus that interacts with the homebase unit.

Consoles being the same as handhelds? Not if your serious about multiplayer.

Woah... slow down, mayne
Gamecube games come first :P!

This isn't a bad idea to be fair, sure the graphics would look a bit messier than they do on the nintendo ds, but if Nintendo were to introduce some sort of scheme where you could download a game you already own for your DS onto your Wii U console, it can only be a good thing. More games to play is never bad.

Maybe it's the reason Nintendo introduced the GamePad? Obviously first and foremost it's for use with Wii U titles, but if they're being smart and looking ahead, they may well be able to keep selling old DS titles through the Wii U, long after the Nintendo DS is obsolete.

Just my two, shining pennies...

If they tried that, it would look HORRIBLE.. I couldnt imagine the already pixelated DS games on that small screen expanded to a 55in led.. No jus no.. Even if it were in a small box making it 4:3, still would look terrible.. worse than ps1 would too

not a bad idea, but they'd need something to upscale the graphics first naturally... not necessarily upscale to HD, just enough upscaling for it to look better when viewed from a large screen.

I also agree with AJBACK2FRAG, regarding the possibility of later creating a unified console that is both a handheld and a home console. NVidia proved it can be done via Project Shield, and from what I've read about Steambox, it's possible they will also go the same route in some way. Not to mention recently rumors about PS4 closely integrating with Vita, and with a touch+biometrics controller, are going the same direction.

Wouldn't running say a ds game on your WiiU upscale it similar to Wii games run on your WiiU just because your WiiU is attatched to your hd televion via hdmi cable?

perhaps so. but upscaling for Wii games may have been integrated to the Wii U, considering that it has a dedicated mode for Wii.

but then again, we'll be seeing cross-play features with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and I believe that's just the tip of the iceberg. Miyamoto did want to explore more the idea of cross-play.

but conforming with Jadedz, they should consider VC first for GameCube games.
