DualShock 4 on PS4 – Is it Time for a Change?

As the DualShock has been the consistent PlayStation icon for many fans, the question that seems to be raised is ‘what will happen to it with each new generation?’ As rumors have once again sparked about a different DualShock 4, the Daily Reaction crew of Seb and Dan address the potential for changing the DS for the PS4. (Dev, Next-Gen, PS Vita, PS3)

Please no, I'm used to the DS3. Biometrics could be cool, but no touch stuff.
Foolsjoker  +   673d ago
Yeah, keep the main design but don't mess it up too bad.
theBAWSE  +   673d ago
Definitely redesign the L2 & R2 triggers on the DS3...I hate the way they slant in..need them more like the dual shocks of old

I completely agree!
I F$#KIN hate the L2 and R2 buttons on the DS3! such uncomfortable useless buttons and no matter how fast I push them, they still seem to go up and down really slow?!?!.

If they are gonna change the controller for PS4 then they should at least make the DS3 compatible with the PS4 as well. That way those that prefer DualShock can continue to use it.

Why not give console gamers a choice on which controller they want to choose.. its not hard.
DOMination-  +   673d ago
Guys, wait until you see the new controller before moaning. I know its been 15 years and i appreciate after that long, change is hard. But things move on.

Sony have a good track record with controllers. Whatever they come up with, Im sure it'll be good.
DeadlyFire  +   673d ago
Like the last one they came up with for PS3 and quickly threw out the window for DS3?
yeahokchief  +   673d ago
Here is a thought: Offer 2 variations of PS4 controllers!! Offer the standard dualshock 4, but then also blow us away with something new particularly for the bigger hands of adults.

I own PS1,PS2 and PS3 and I've always found the Gamecube and smaller Xbox1 controllers the most comfortable.

The Ps3 controller can cause pains in my hands after a few long hours of pressing in L3 while moving around in 1st person games. This is because the controller handles are too small and awkwardly slanted.

The joysticks need concave tops for more control so people aren't tempted to buy those little snap on things.

For shooters I believe the Xbox joystick placement is optimal, but i'm open to new layouts.

simple answer yes but change isn't always so good so maybe a make some changes but keep the main concept the same

everyone wants change till it happens than every day will be articles about how the old controller was so much better

i am happy with DS3 as i was with DS1 and 2
Blackdeath_663  +   673d ago
no, a new controller is good if they give you the option to use the ps3 controller on the ps4. that way you get the best of both worlds. see, change not always so bad.
LordMe  +   673d ago
NO! I use my DS3 for everything... Even my PC gaming!
Root  +   673d ago
They just have to update it, sort some things out here and there to make it even better and they'll be good to go
Relientk77  +   673d ago
I love the Dualshock controller, and if they didnt change it, I would love it
boybato  +   673d ago
perfect controller in my opinion.. nice button layout (though I guess, its just because I am soooooo used to it.), nice form factor.

only change I would request to be had would be that they modify the part of housing that holds the analogue sticks wherein I wish it would be like whats in the vita(encased in a piece of metal to avoid chipping)
Killzoner99  +   673d ago
The current design is absolutely perfect. I really don't see how you can top it but if anyone can its Sony. Trust me they have something HUGE up their sleeves .
ufo8mycat  +   673d ago
I laugh at all these fanboy comments. You guys really have no idea what ergonomics is do you? The DS3 is poor when it comes to ergonomics.

1) Poor handles / controller grip. THe handles are too thin and short, therefore you are unable to grasp it with your palms (fully), instead its more like wrapping half with your palms and half with your fingers around it, which causes poor wrist stability. In other words, bad for the wrist.

2) Analog stick layout - Again should be where the DPAD is for natural thumb joint position.

360 controller has 1) down perfectly and at least 2) half right.

Time for better ergonomics Sony. 2D games are no longer the dominent type of games, so no reason to keep a 2D controller design. (DPAD in natural/primary position) is no longer the primary control.

Until there is a video that shows the 360 controller is better than the ds3 in games, then there is no need to change the ds3 completely,I would suggest they increase the ds3 dimension some, go back to the ds2 shoulder button lay out and make the joy stick not as loose feeling then the ds4 will be perfect.

the ds3 is made to be held differently than the 360 remote. It isn't as heavy so you dont need to grasp it. There has also been an article that shows ds3 analog sticks give an advantage over 360s because of the less resistance and dead zone. I dont see how it has better ergonomics. Neither has great ergonomics.
DragonKnight  +   673d ago
For the last time, the "natural position" argument is a logical fallacy. And clearly you've never held a DS3 by your description.

Also again, the Dualshock won an award for its design, so professionals think the design is great enough as it is, what makes you think Sony should listen to people like you with apparently warped, asymmetrical hands?
Dfooster  +   673d ago
I tend to agree. Obviously people get used to what they use and think that's the only way to go but the proof is in the pudding as they say. And when I've played Xbox for hours on end my hands feel as fresh as the moment I picked up the controller. After about two hours of playing on a friends ps3 my left thumb was aching from having to reach an unnatural position to control the joystick and I would say I have an average hand size.

I think it's pretty much considered by anyone who isn't a fanboy that the more natural left joystick position is to be found on the Xbox pad, it's just whether Sony will swallow their pride and copy this design or stick with what their consumers are used to?
hesido  +   673d ago
Being used to a controller is different from it being the perfect controller. I am really used to DS3 as I was always a PS gamer, but when I took an Xbox360 controller, it felt incredibly well, fitting my hand, although I'm not keen on the asymmetric design.
DOMination-  +   673d ago
Ps3 only people will say ds3 is better. Xbox only will say the 360 controller is better.

Personally i have both and prefer the 360 controller but i doubt anyone cares about my opinion. Rightly so, make your own judgements and don't be offended by others.

Microsoft spent more money on r&d for the controller than any other component on 360. Obviously they concluded this was the best design. So there might be some truth to the ergonomics argument but Im not really qualified to say.

Gaming is so important now i doubt either company will design something that's bad for next gen.
pablo-b  +   673d ago
@ DOMination

i am sorry but no. i know lots of people that own both (like me), who all agree that the 360 controller is alot better and more confortable.

apart from the d-pad, the 360 controller is the best that i have used.... and i have use everything since the atari vcs2600. which was when i started gaming
Minato-Namikaze  +   673d ago
Dont feed the trolls
League_of_Draven  +   673d ago
There is no point in changing it. It's the best controller there is and it has always been the best controller. If I wanted to play with a different controller then I'd just buy the Wii U.
Pillsbury1  +   673d ago
The dual shock design has been perfect since it manifested. They should keep the shape the same, I don't mind if they change the buttons. As long as they let backwards compatibility with dual shock 3 I will be a happy gamer.
matrixman92  +   673d ago
so since one website made a "insider source" (I doubt it) article about the dualshock changing, can we expect a dozen articles on this everyday now?
HalfNerdHalfAmazing  +   673d ago
When it come to dual shock all Sony need to do change is how is shape
Veneno  +   673d ago
As long as the PS3 controller is still the best standard controller for Fighting games, I'm cool. If they can improve on it, that'd be better.
TrendyGamers  +   673d ago
I'm happy with the controller as is.
nolifeking  +   673d ago
Change the l2 and r2 back to their original forms so I don't get pinched and I'll be happy.
aLucidMind  +   673d ago
Like many others, I would prefer they keep the design the way it has been; the Dualshock has practically become a symbol for Playstation since the only difference has been they switched to the concave R2/L2 buttons.

The only thing I would want them to do is find a better variant of the concave R2/L2 buttons, as every Dualshock 3 controller I've bought wound up with the R2 and/or L2 becoming loose and wobbly (if anyone has a fix for that, let me know how to fix that) and the fact that the Dualshock 3's are just a bit small for me. I've got big hands and I need a bigger controller lol. Beyond that, no complaints.
2pacalypsenow  +   673d ago
Tornadobounce  +   673d ago
Yep. L2 + R2 triggers and Slightly bigger hand grips.
Bathyj  +   673d ago
i dont mind if they refine the triggers but please dont change it too much. dont offset the sticks or make an xbox knockoff. the reason its never changed is because it was so good from start. thats why sharks have never evolved, they got it right to begin with.
Treian  +   673d ago
don't fix what isn't broken please :(
strigoi814  +   673d ago
if they want to introduce a new one Go..but please make my ds3 compatible so i have some sort of options
MasterCornholio  +   673d ago
All they need to do is improve the triggers and i will be extremely happy.
steve30x  +   673d ago
I just want a controller that will make FPS and Racing games easier to play with. I would love Keyboard and mouse compatibility but I know how much console gamers dont like that.
Kingthrash360  +   672d ago
No such thing as best IMO. Only preference.
Should they Change something sure as long as its for the better. I'm a rare breed I'm comfortable with both ps3 and 360' controller hated to the max the wii tv remote thing. Hated the swing lika light saber gimmick as well. I don't care what they do but just make it comfortable I don't want to know I have a controller in my hands I want want to play. Button locations to be in natural positions that feel good. Wait come to think of it one gripe r2&l2. Really bad when I'm watching Netflix every time I move and the controllers next to me it fast forwards or rewinds my movie.... Maybe Netflix could patch this tho.
Belking  +   672d ago
Hell yes. Sony its about time you make some positive changes with that controller. The only positive is the directional pad. Everything else could use a makeover. I thought it was good for previous Playstations until the 360 one came along. Other than the crappy directional pad, it's a better overall controller than the ds3. Just my opinion people. I know you will blow up the disagrees anyway.
