Why the latest PS4 and Xbox 720 rumours are wide of the mark

MJ - There have been a lot of rumours over the past couple of days about the hardware that's going to be used inside the PS4 and Xbox 720, and the brilliant Lee Bradley pointed me towards the two sets of figures that are causing plenty of debate.

VG247 is reporting that the PS4 will have 1.84 Teraflops of computing power thanks to an AMD A10-based APU, and that the next Xbox will have 1.23 Teraflops of grunt thanks to an AMD Radeon HD 8770 graphics chip.

"AMD has traditionally cut down its GPUs in order to fit them inside APUs. The HD 7660D inside the A10-5800K may have been based on 6900-series cards, but it included just 384 stream processors. Even the most modest of those discrete chips, the Radeon HD 6930, included 1,280 stream processors and had a 186W TDP. The HD 6970 had 1,536 and a 250W TDP."

I struggle to make sense of this type of writing. Just too many meaningless letters and numbers and very little clarity. :(

That means he knows what he's talking about unlike many other PC fanboys who think they know everything about PC cuz they build a few gaming rigs.

These parts are looking like Mobile parts to me. Say 3 SOC chips. Only way TDP would not melt the boards is if it were on a mobile design. Yes?

AMD 8850M or 8870M - Dual = 992 x 2 = 1984 Gigaflops
AMD 8770M - Single = 633 Gigaflops

Total = 2.617 Tflops = to roughly 7 times what X360's full system is capable of doing. Matches that rumor of 6-8 times what X360 could do. Throw in the extra CPU Gigaflops its likely 2.8 Tflops or 8 times X360's power.

Give or take a little depending on the parts used in the system.
