Was 2012 the year downloads ruled the roost?

Games Fiends writes:

2012: The year downloads ruled the roost? Surely not. Surely the big budget blockbusters proved once again that downloadable tiltes are cheap experimental or niche products for short plays? Hell no! (Culture, Dust: An Elysian Tale, FTL: Faster Than Light, Hotline Miami, Journey, Mark of the Ninja, PC, PS3, Sine Mora, Sound Shapes, Torchlight II, Xbox 360)

Downloading will eventually rule the roost (already does on some platforms) so the whole argument about locking a disc to a single account or console will be a mute point.
