It's a nice feature. I can only think of 2(?) other games that did something similar.
Star Trek Armada 2 was pretty much just a normal, generic Warcraft-style RTS... but there was a "cinematic" window in the corner of the UI with dynamic 3D camera movement, simulating the cinematic effects of the television series' (and movies). You could double-click it to go full-screen. It was a great way to make the passive, strategic combat a more engaging and visceral.
And I believe Star Wars: Empire at War did the exact same thing several years later.
