SWTOR and 'the gay planet' -- visibility isn't enough anymore

Pixels or Death's Mike Barrett explains why the problem facing LGBT gamers isn't about half-hearted attempts, it's about a refusal to move on and take the next step for equality.

"In it’s simplest form, we need Final Fantasy X, but with Yuna replaced by a male summoner. Force the characters in a love story, or, at least, in a story with some emotional weight, to be gay. But instead, I guess us queers are supposed to be so honored that we’re a part of the game for once that we should ignore poor representation." (BioWare, Culture, EA, Industry, PC)

Nobody is going to make a game like that because it would be completely ignored by most gamers.
Games with homosexual main characters will not sell and game devs know it. The majority of heterosexual people are just too uncomfortable with gay people in media, it's sad but it's true.
I hope i don't seem anti-gay here, because i'm not. I think gay people are FAAAABULOUS!!!

The majority of gamers will always be at least a little uncomfortable with homosexuality, and that's not really wrong. Too most straight people, the idea of a gay relationship is, for lack of a better word, gross, even if they support gay rights, like myself. It's natural, and there's nothing wrong with it. Just like gay people are wired to be gay, straights are wired to be straight.

That means that any game that featured a gay relationship front and center probably wouldn't sell well with straight gamers, but that doesn't mean that gamers are mindless bigots. In means they're put off by gay romance. As to whether that's fair or not, well life isn't fair.

Very well said.

Well, games with straight characters sell to gay people too you know. I don't think sex between male and females are gross. I'm just not attracted to females. This industry would be hurting a heck of a lot more if it weren't for gay people like me who are perfectly fine with heterosexual couples in gaming. Don't you guys think you could put up with it at least one mainstream game with a gay main character. We do it every day.

Slightly off-topic, the gay planet thing in Star Wars sounds quite a lot like digital segregation. lol I'm sure that wasn't their intention, but... :D

^ I've always been confused by that line of reasoning as well. How are people able to "relate" to hardened soldiers, monsters, demons, Italian plumbers, and even flat-out murderers...and yet a character that is gay is not only automatically un-relatable, but apparently can't even be interesting enough to heterosexuals to carry a narrative?

You don't have to be anymore gay to get into a narrative involving a gay character than you have to be a murdering gangster to enjoy the story of Nico in GTA IV.

I've got nothing against gay people, but I think they should understand that it's not personal at all. Unlike movies and television, video games have a much smaller population of dedicated partakers- people who'd buy and play new games on a regular basis. Therefore the population of any group present in the larger populous(in this case, gay individuals) is going to be smaller.

I wouldn't have a problem with a gay-centric game at all. And if it's good, I'll buy it and play it, cuz I like good games.

But they probably wouldn't present much of a chance for profit for most developers or publishers. And I don't know that there's a publisher or developer out there who cares enough(not that they DON'T, but that it's not especially CLOSE to them) to spend money they won't get back.

It COULD happen, but I don't think it's likely, unless the game is made by a gay developer with deep pockets or connections.

on the bright side, that's gonna be the most fabulous planet in the entire universe...
