Why Final Fantasy VI’s Kefka is the Best Video Game Villain of All Time

From Bowser and Dr. Robotnik to M. Bison and Dr. Wiley, gaming has had many iconic villains. But as well known as those villains are, some of the best villains are found in the Final Fantasy series.

When you think of Final Fantasy villains, who immediately comes to mind? If you were playing games in the PlayStation 1 era, no doubt Sephiroth will be the first one you think of. But while he is doubtless the most famous villain of the series, he is far from the greatest villain Final Fantasy has to offer. That dubious honor instead falls to Kefka, the main antagonist of Final Fantasy VI. (Final Fantasy VI, PS3, Retro)

C'mon, we all know why... He actually wins and destroys the world. How many villains actually accomplish destroying the world and become a God? Besides, he's not caught up on petty ideals or anything. He just wants to destroy and kill. The very definition of evil. Then again, there was a reason for his insanity, the way the Magicite poisoned his mind.

Destroying the world is a pretty sound indication of a good villain, that and on disc DLC...

Lol! That was a good one, and I agree 100%

It wasn't magicite that "poisoned" his mind, it was when he was infused using magitek that screwed him up, he was among the first for augmentation, when Celes received hers, the process had been refined, which is why she's not insane like Kefka.

@Snookies, I didn't disagree with you, btw. ;]

FF6 sounds like a pretty awesome game, I'll have to play it sometime.
Snookies12  +   924d ago
Yeah, realized that mistake afterwards and couldn't edit lol! You're right though, it was the magitek infusion that broke his mind.

EDIT: No worries regardless, always gotta expect at least one disagree on a comment. :]

@ Zerocrossing i am in no way telling you not to because it is my favorite all time but its not a "play it sometime" game its a LONG LONG game. Sadly/Proudly i can say ive actually beat the game 7 times with all characters at level 99. Yea ive spent way to much of my life playing it lol

@kma2k - Whew, I'm not weird then... I've at least gone through the game from start to finish 7-8 times...

Luca Blight is a pretty under rated villian...

I haven't played Suikoden II in awhile. But, Luca went down by deception, Kefka needed to go by adventurers collecting ancient magics and items that were unearthed when the world was undone. (by Kefka and with the power of Goddess statues)

Luca was ruthless though and I agree to a point, that he is underrated.

In Persona 2 we have Nyarlathotep, he is more of a villain because he is not crazy he enjoys causing troubles and suffering to people. In Persona 2 he managed to destroy the world by making people wish for it, he destroyed the world appart from a city called Sumaru. In the end a higuer being (His good counterpart called Philemon) created a new world because Nyarlathotep won the bet they had that humanity would or not destroy itself and thus created a new timeline called Persona 2 Eternal Punishment where P3&P4 take place (As the game Persona 2 Innocent Sin the P3&P4 cast is dead).

Not only that, as long as people have any negative emotion Nyarlathotep cant die so is is like 10 levels above Kefka.

Not only that he crafted a 10 year scheme for his plan to come to motion, he has all the time of the world to destroy it.
Best villain ever: Persona 2 Nyarlathotep.

Well, Final Fantasy VI is the best video-game of all time so it`s correct. Perfection as far as it can be achieved in video-games. Comparing this with games like cod, gow, gears, me, gta, killzone, halo is an utter disgrace to the intellectual mind.
Spookshow  +   924d ago
Back when storytelling mattered more than shiny graphics or fps count, back when you didn't need online to have a good time and DLC was nothing to be upset about.

Long gone are those golden days...

COD/Halo days have come now.

Sad, isn't it?

If kefka isn't the best , he's top 2. FF6 is the best FF of all time.
ayabrea93  +   924d ago
Kefka is actually a really frightening villain because he was just so damn unpredictable. there's no reason to anything he does other than sheer destruction and that's a scary concept.
CLOUD1983  +   924d ago
yeah the Japanese version of JOKER is the best VG villain ever... the one who write that is obviously a clown himself.
Pozzle  +   924d ago
If Kefka didn't look like a clown, would you even make a comparison to the Joker though? Because apart from superficial similarities (e.g. clown clothing, maniacal laugh and bad jokes), the two are really quite different.

...Unless I've missed the comic where the Joker is an army general capable of using magic and mentally controlling certain people, who eventually destroys an entire planet and wipes out everybody who does not worship him.
