IGN Review - Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is one of the best RPGs I’ve played in years. Moreover, it joins the elusive ranks of the best PlayStation 3 exclusives, a group very rarely encroached upon by any studio Sony doesn’t own. Ni No Kuni is just that good: a beautiful mixture of the traditional makings of a JRPG combined with gorgeous graphics, a wonderful story, a great cast of characters and thoughtful gameplay. (Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, PS3) 9.4/10

Seven more days! Ni No Kuni is one of my Highly Anticipated games for 2013. I'm happy to see reviewers are enjoying their time with it.
Septic  +   779d ago
I have never really looked forward to this (because I was oblivious to what it was) but looking at some gameplay, this does look incredible now.

This might be a day one for me.

sony keep bring those amazing games like no other
it's awesome to be ps3 owner

as i said before
"ps3 start this year with a bang (ni no kuni)

and in the middle ( god of war/sly cooper )

and will finish it with a bang as well (the last of us/beyond two souls and maybe TLG will get a date this year) "

We've got a great game on our hands here. If you like RPGs, this one seems like a lock.

AWESOME! I am so glad this game is getting the recognition it deserves. Cant wait to play it! Really happy to get a AAA classic JRPG on my PS3.
Rainstorm81  +   779d ago
I went back to play White Knight Chronicles 1-2 to ease the wait for Ni No Kuni, I gotta say I like it I'm kinda mad I missed out on this, even though I picked it up for 10$ .

Level 5 just knows how to craft a good JRPG, I think if any company, they have taken the reigns from Square-Enix (Squaresoft)
sikbeta  +   779d ago
Game is going to bomb, right? with all the charm in the world and will not sell well, that's too bad...
Army_of_Darkness  +   779d ago
yeah, yeah! the ps3 is going out with a big bang this year!
Can't wait for this jrpg! its been forever that i actually got to play a great jrpg game! since folklore I think lol!
Enemy  +   779d ago
A GOTY contender in January, wow. Looks like Level-5 are back.

This with the The Last of Us makes two!
chrispseuphoria  +   778d ago
The next week is going to be slow in anticipation for this but hey, I've got Persona 4 Golden to beat...
Gamer1982  +   778d ago
Shame no game in January ever gets GOTY... Excited for this game.. This game is the kind of game I bought a PS3 for.

I was at target a few days ago and saw the bin for this was empty. Anyone think this could fall into the rarity factor like suikoden 2 or ff7 black label?

I just pre-ordered it from Zavvi.com. They give you 10% off if you order now. Can't wait! This is my first day 1 purchase in months. Hell even years! This one I cannot resist.

This should start the JRPG come back .

Xillia and and Persona 5 cant come soon enough. These games are now picking up were Final Fantasy failed the jrpg genre this gen.

I got a few monts ago Tales of Graces F (my first Tales game) and i love it.
Cant wait for Xillia now

Seems like people forget Xenoblade rather quickly, For many that was the best Jrpg in a decade. Ni No Kuni will be great, but it wont start anything that isn't already in motion ^^
wishingW3L  +   779d ago
is not that people forgets about Xenoblade is just that people already forgot that the Wii even exist.
dboyman  +   779d ago
@wishingW3L @AsheXII Or the fact the game was distributed in such a limited fashion in North America. I wanted to get a copy when it came out, but none of the local stores carried a copy, even Gamestop..
HarryMasonHerpderp  +   779d ago

I was so disappointed with Xenoblade.
I know I'm in the minority but I think it was completely overrated. Not saying it was a bad game but I thought the voice acting was atrocious, it made me feel awkward every time they would put on a fake English accent.
(it's so exaggerated, and they pause for really long after each sentence)
I also thought the graphics were pretty bad, after seeing screenshots and videos online I was expecting a great looking game, on my HD TV though it looked awful. Anyway not to completely bash the game I thought the gameplay was really good and the fighting was fun (even though they wouldn't shut up shouting the names of their attacks everytime you press a button) and the story was okay. I probably would of enjoyed the game a lot more if there was no voice acting and it was all txt.

Holy crap. I absolutely loved White Knight Chronicles, and IGN didn't seem to care for it much at all. So for them to take another Level 5 RPG and LOVE it like this, it must be amazing. I can't wait!
Rainstorm81  +   779d ago
13 hours into White Knight Chronicles and im loving it, I want to get through 1 and 2 before Ni No Kuni comes out but I doubt it.
chadboban  +   779d ago
After Xenoblade and The Last Story I'm so glad to see the return of fantastic console JRPGs. Ni No Kuni is definitely one of my most anticipated games of the year. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

I'm so glad to finally be able to say that great console JRPGs are back!

the review does say that the game's like a cross between Pokemon and Tales series.

First day buy! Level-5 x Studio Ghibli Fanboy here, so it's a no brainer, Lol.
j-blaze  +   779d ago
i'm a huge fan of Ghibli myself, they did the art and cutscenese for this game, i have to say they did a very bad job at designing the characters this time
DigitalRaptor  +   778d ago
HAHAHAHHA! So it's just coincidence that the one Ghibli production that has "badly designed" characters is the PS3 exclusive video game?

Mate, we get it. You hate PS3 exclusives for bizarre reasons that aren't tangible in any real sense nor do you justify them. Just stop causing yourself this embarrassment.

Only on PlayStation®3.
Summons75  +   779d ago
That would be really nice to see this game get nominated for goty, realistically though it will probably be pushed aside for mediocre games or AAA games which typically are nominated before they are even released. Hopefully it will shine though. I'm excited for this game.
Godchild1020  +   779d ago
It can get nominated for Best RPG or something along those lines, if it doesn't get nominated for Game of the Year.
Imalwaysright  +   779d ago
2013 is packed with great games but i would like to see Ni No Kuni win GOTY because the JRPG genre needs it.
BanBrother  +   779d ago
I hope it does also. So many under-appreciated JRPG's, it would make me very happy if this one GOTY (obviously it will win some, but I mean lots and lots).

The only contenders so far, at least for me are Metro Last light, Beyond 2 Souls and The Last Of us

PS3 owners should also check out tales of Vesperia. You can import it, and the PS3 version has added features and dialogue (waaay more dialogue). It is rumoured to be releasing in the West (only japan right now)
Rainstorm81  +   779d ago
But......it's January......o_O
DOMination-  +   779d ago
Congratulations Level 5 and Studio Ghibli. Looks like you made a quality game.
BanBrother  +   779d ago
It was to be expected. It never looked like failing. Every single screenshot was beautiful. It is one of those games that depsite what consoles people own, they will fall in love with it. The only game i think that will be able to compete with this game quality wise this year is The Last of Us and beyond 2 sous.

This year is going to be better than last year for sure. Aliens, Ni No Kuni, GoW A, Gears Judgement, tLOU, B2S.

Anyone who hasn't taken the leap into JRPG's should buy this game. You have nothing to lose. I can almost guarantee that you will fall in love with the genre and start searching the i ternet for others to play. Trust me, I have introduced many to the JRPG genre and they all loved it.
Snookies12  +   778d ago
Beyond 2 Sous!? The game where two legendary Sou Chefs compete in an arena of epic proportions!?

Lol, sorry, had to mess with you there. XD
g-nome  +   779d ago
I'm sure sales will still be disappointing. Kids do love their COD fps these days
Septic  +   779d ago
It should sell well in Japan though.
Godchild1020  +   779d ago
It's been out in Japan for 2 years and it just hit over 200K. But that is according to VGcharts and I don't know if you could download the title there.

It should sell better here in North America and Europe because we didn't get the DS version and Japan did. Seeing as how the game will be available in the PSN Store, retail sales can go either way. I know the collector's edition was sold out, but I don't know how many of them were made.
#7.1.1 (Edited 779d ago ) | Agree(14) | Disagree(2) | Report
grailly  +   779d ago
didn't it come out a long time ago in japan? and didn't sell well? or am I just confusing it with the DS version?

Here's hoping it does well here.
KillaManiac  +   778d ago
Doesnt have the violent art appeal or sex appeal character I assume which is why it sold poor.
Qrphe  +   779d ago

lol i have no idea why you r getting disagrees!? anyone? any ideas?
Snookies12  +   778d ago
It's because there have been some great ones coming out lately. Between Tales of Graces, Xenoblade, Ys Seven, Witcher 2, etc. I believe that's why, although this looks to be one of those old-school types which is great to see.
first1NFANTRY  +   778d ago

abzdine  +   779d ago
i haven't turned on PS3 for some days, this game is certainly gonna change things. i'm only playing on Vita Battle Royale and Gravity Rush.
talocaca  +   779d ago
I really wish this came would come to the Vita....the days of playing 40 hour games at home are gone.

Living in Tokyo I spend a lot of time commuting so this game would be perfect!

I think it didn't sell because Japanese are VERY group oriented..."if my friends buy it, I will buy it too",,,just look at Monster hunter.
bunfighterii  +   779d ago
I don't live in Tokyo but I sympathise. I'm no longer a student with plenty of time on my hands- work and other commitments mean I have very little gaming time nowadays. I still manage to get a bit in on the weekend though, but a 40 hour game will last me a loooong time.
Studio-YaMi  +   779d ago
Demon's Souls (PS3) didn't sell well in Japan, when it came to the US & Europe,it became a franchise that is admired by many many many people...

So if anything,I won't debunk the game just because it sold poorly in one region of the world, try the game yourself then decide if it's worth your cash or not...

Just saying !

Snookies12  +   778d ago
To me, Xenoblade, Last Story, and Tales of Graces were a great return for JRPGs this generation. Though yes, they certainly do need more support!

MegaLagann  +   778d ago
The JRPG has always been here. When people said the genre was dead, games like Persona 4 and Eternal Sonata were keeping it alive. And games like Xenoblade, The Last Story & Tales of Graces F set the gears in motion for a comeback.

Game Informer gave it a 7/10.

Concept: Journey to Studio Ghibli inspired lands in the name of saving a young boy's mother.

Graphics: Vibrant and detailed graphics make a beautiful experience.

Sound: Music drives certain scenes, adding intensity to the journey. The voice acting is impressive.

Playability: Ni no Kuni isn't easy to grasp, but once you pass the learning curve, it gets better.

Entertainment: The world keeps you entranced. Unfortunately, the characters and old-school RPG mechanics don't have the same charm.

Replay Value: Moderate.
Inception  +   779d ago
"Replay Value: Moderate"

GI play this game without even bother to search for 100 hidden treasure chests, seven pirate memorials, and sixteen hidden villages on the world map to discover; an Imajinn battle league to conquer; a magic spell book to complete; a casino with slots, minigames and a cutscene theater; postgame quests and bounties to hunt down; alchemy recipes to find; and Golden Imajinns to catch.

Huh, reviewers this day are dissapointing -_-
DOMination-  +   779d ago
I think, despite the ratio of agrees to disagrees, you mistook the meaning of 'replay value'.

I haven't played it, so won't comment on whether it's worth multiple playthroughs. But from experience, most JRPGs that I loved first time through were still just as charming if I played through a second time.. albeit had to be a few years later.
TimeSkipLuffy  +   779d ago
everyone has their opinion. I will make my own but I am sure I will looooove this game to the bone!!! XD
GribbleGrunger  +   779d ago
This is a great review but to liken it to Tales is erroneous. There was this little known game that Level 5 made called Dragon's Quest 8. I'd say it was a cross between that and pokemon. Great review though! I can't wait for February (I'm in Europe) :(
Snookies12  +   778d ago
Yeah, this doesn't seem much like a Tales game. I still hope it captures me like those have though!
vickers500  +   778d ago
Dragon Quest 8 was amazing. Bought it during the early ps3 days, when my backwards compatible ps3 was still functioning. Never beat it, but got very close. I wish they would do an HD remaster of DQ8, the game looked absolutely beautiful, and it was the only JRPG that I've ever liked aside from some of the gameboy pokemon games.

I am a little jealous this is not on XBOX360 or PC and this game looks like a real reason to get a PS3. ( Ended all other necessary PS3 exclusives on friend's PS3 such as God of War 3, Uncharted series, infamous etc)
freezola75  +   779d ago
Very good review of this game... after reading it, I wanna play it even more.

Looks like you will be grinding through it too.. I love the gorgeous landscapes... it'll have a ton of secret areas where you get really cool things for finding them!

Oh the fact that the familiars will evolve over time and some are given to you but after a while in, you have to lure them to your team....

I have to get back in to this genre and make some time for Ni no Kuni

Great job Level 5 and Studio Ghibli!

I will sure have this game in my possession when it comes out! Can't wait.. peace

GribbleGrunger  +   778d ago
Yeah, it has many hidden villages and chests too find. And then when you get different transport (one of which is a ship) you can access places such as little islands. I just KNOW this is going to be a next gen Dragon's Quest 8
CLOUD1983  +   779d ago
I didn't have any doubt really about review scores I was certain that they will be amazing like this game :) & even if a score was not so good every1 will know that the reason was the bad tastes about games some wannabe-game journalist have not the fault of Level-5 or Studio Ghibli because those 2 is obvious that they did an amazing/exceptional job.

Anyway I think that it will be better if we leave aside review scores & critics & start celebrate already because this MASTERPIECE is just a few days away from our shores, so open some bottles, start dancing & make just a little more patient until the real fun begins! ^__^
