How Dark Messiah Shames Skyrim And Dishonored

Quote: "Dark Messiah: Might And Magic is a game that was developed by Arkane Studios using Valve’s Source engine — I believe it was the first non-Valve game to be developed using Source, and as such it excited me intensely, prior to release — which was published by Ubisoft and released in 2006. It wasn’t the greatest game ever, by a long shot. It took a silent protagonist who was apparently the fabled chosen one, added a contrived story filled with predictable plot twists and uninspired characters, and threw in a naked demon lady (seriously) just for the lols. Review scores were not friendly to Dark Messiah and critical reception was lukewarm at best. Very few sites favoured it too much at all. But of every site that reviewed it, there was one thing to which every reviewer agreed: It did first person combat so right. " (Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Dishonored, PC, PS3, Retro, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Xbox 360)

Good article! There are a couple of areas in modern game design that have fallen shamefully behind stuff like graphics and production values. First person combat being one of them, these days its just, sneak up behind enemy and press X to kill them. The area I find lacking these days is the general enemy and friendly AI.

"I was late to The Elder Scrolls series, picking up Oblivion a few years after its release..."

"and this from the guy who went back, a few years ago, and played Beneath A Steel Sky, Fallout and Half-Life, because I simply had to justify having them installed on my PC."

"(oh my fuck, it is awesome to be able to say “Fus Ro Dah” to my screen and watch my character perform the relevant action)"

Writer confirmed for "wannabe PC gamer."

Dark Messiah WAS good though ;)

Is the article writer female too? Those sorta images that go "HAI GAIZ, IM GAMER TOO RITE? LOOK, I GOT ANGRY BIRDS11!" Type of shit?

This person says they got the 'Most praised' or most spoken-about games just out of fucking obligation to basically not want it used against them that if they've not played the heavy hitters of the 80's, 90's and so. They just aren't credible enough. It's like saying "Half-Life 3 sucks when it comes out because Halo 4 came out so-and-so" and OH hey wait I gotta buy HL1 and HL2 noaw hurrr, I was late to the FPS party, hey guys, should I play Doom 1 or Doom 2 first? hurrrr...Wolfenstein or Halo 3? Durrrr

I own all 3 and this article is completely wrong.

"What Dark Messiah did so very right was introduce proper first person combat with swords, shields, daggers, bows and arrows."

Somehow I guess it doesn't matter that all weapons were useless compared to just kicking your opponent into whatever wall of spikes that was conveniently placed in every room.

I wish Ubisoft would make a sequel to Dark Messiah. With how much Skyrim sold for Bethesda you would think Ubisoft would want some of that money.

Fallout 4 and the next elder scrolls game better step it up. I like the combat in this game, I definitely over looked it.
