Has This Generation of Gamers Gone Soft?

OmniGamer writes "Let’s face it, from the 1990′s – Present there has been a VERY noticeable difficulty curve decrease – with most games now including “Super Easy Fun Mode”. Nowadays, very hard games such as Demon/Dark Souls only appeal to the minority of gamers…" (PC, PS Vita, PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360)

the fact that they had to add an easy mode in dark souls for those PC clods, and the fact that they are planning on making the next souls game more "accessible" pretty much points to yes.

Agreed games are going towards casuals specially in recent years with the whole focus on going for the wider audience.

However there still are some gems out there, anyone looking for complex and challenging game play could try Dota 2.

There are about 100 Different chracters to play in Dota 2, each of them with their own special abilities. Customizing them with different items is a further challenge, all depends on what sort of team combo you face. Hence anyone looking for challenging gameplay should def check out Dota 2.

Actually there is no easy mode on pc...its actually much harder, and they said they want to make the story accessible, the story in dark souls is non-existent if you don't read the lore

Gaming in general is far easier now than its ever been. Take a look at the documentaries like 'Chasing Ghosts' and 'The King of Kong' which document how hardcore gaming used to be. Compare that to the likes of having your hand held in the majority of games these days.

Nice example would be games that do the 'Oh you've died 3 times, would you like to lower the difficulty level?'...*facepalm*

I've gone soft compared to when I was younger. Or, I suppose, I have less time to dedicate to trying to beat something that's difficult. Not proud of it, but there it is.

If it is too hard it is no fun. It is that simple. Always put in an easy and extreme hard mode.

According to the media...
Us gamers are far from soft! matter fact, we are apparently so hardcore and mentally unstable that we shoot up places full of innocent bye-standards cause we thought it was just all a video game....

But really... I will be honest, I'm not as good in video games as I use to be in my younger days where I kicked ass in the Nes-ps2 era.

There's so much games nowadays that being dedicated to one would make you missed a lot of other games out there. This is true when it comes to huge RPGs. Which is why I didn't by Skyrim. From what I've heard it's a great game but thanks to my experience with Morrowind, I know it will be a huge time sinker. The same goes for multiplayer games.

It's not simply because that games are getting harder but it's due to the sheer volume of games gamers yearn to play but limited by the amount of time available before the next new ones appear. You have games that get bigger and bigger in scale and content so having an extremely high difficulty setting will certainly drag the gaming experience beyond it's worth.

It's all about backlogs.

It's not us going soft, it's most Dev's doing what everyone else did because the guy running their company with all the money tells them to do so. <---ruining good games.

I would rather be able to experience the entirety of a game because it's a bit too easy, then get extremely frustrated and quit.

Good dev's forgot how to make a game somewhat difficult without it being cheap or dumb.

I think it's because back in the 90's gaming used to be a more niche hobby compared to the mainstream activity that it is today. Most people who played games were in fact real gamers that had a passion for the hobby and media.

Today though, a lot of "gamers" are just people who only play big blockbusters because it gets advertised/hyped up and all their friends are talking about it. Those people don't care about gaming at all and only do it to stay socially relevant.

The problem is it costs a lot of money to develop games and a game has to sell very well just to break even, so games are being made so that anybody can complete them. It's a shame and I wish all the people who don't actually care would go away.

I don't even know what a gamer is anymore. I just play what I want regardless of difficulty and console. I've been playing games for 25+ years and I could care less about difficulty, Dante's white hair, or ME3 ending. I just play what I want.
All these gamers now a days I don't even know WTF they talking about.
They'll boycott a game before the game is even released based on a f*&^%ing screenshot.

Its painful to even read half the crap you do on these boards/sites.

I honestly don't understand why it matters if difficulty is lower. The point of games is to have fun and entertain yourself, and for a lot of people, getting shit on constantly isn't fun. As long as a game has a good story and gameplay, I don't care about difficulty.
