DmC Devil May Cry review | X360 Magazine

So there’s the problem. It’s the name. The game itself is categorically excellent and even if it isn’t quite what you might expect from something labeled Devil May Cry, this is a robust, deep and brilliantly executed action game, not to mention a sterling effort at reinventing something that was – if DMC4 was anything to go by – beginning to grow stale. So it’s just the name that’s the issue, then? Heh. Maybe we aren’t such shitty shrinks after all.

Ok, here we go! (rubs hands vigorously in glorious anticipation).

Come on fanboys, let the demented vitriol fly. Don't disappoint me now.

Very nice review, this is gonna be some show.

Instead of fanning the flames and encouraging dispute you may want to consider, getting a life.

-"The game itself is categorically excellent..."

Meanwhile, Adam Sessler gave it a 3/5 and called the story that it looks like it's written by a 12 year old who just found his big brother's heavy metal magazines and calling Donte's character as a male adolescent power trip.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

-"this is a robust, deep and brilliantly executed action game, "

It's barely passable in terms of gameplay standards. It may provide fun to some people, but it certainly does nothing new to reinvent what was present in previous two Ninja Theory games let alone Devil May Cry games.

-"not to mention a sterling effort at reinventing something that was – if DMC4 was anything to go by – beginning to grow stale"

If you played Devil May Cry 4, for what it is and didn't ask for more (let's say, an amazing story that's filled with unexpected twists and turns and deep characters), it was a great game with some flaws (replaying half of the game in reverse, for instance, which was purely Capcom's fault for wanting to rush the game). None of the fans wanted a Devil May Cry game that had a story or characters written by Paul Thomas Anderson, but more of the same with certain improevements. There certainly wasn't any dire need for a reboot...

-"So it’s just the name that’s the issue, then? Heh. Maybe we aren’t such shitty shrinks after all."

Again, this is proving what people who hate the game think regarding people who love and defend DmC... Most of them are just juvenile, tasteless kids who are striving to look like they are smarter or just different than the majority who just don't like the game, while failing to provide a proper reason whatsoever other than; "it looks cool". And it's not so surprising that the first batch of reviews are positive and are coming from mostly small scale media outlets that can't afford losing Capcom's handouts (as early review copies, not necessarily actual payments in cash) or just tabloid journalist websites like Kotaku.

yep, both those statements were from your comment. you can't critisize a game for everything...make up your mind

"If you played Devil May Cry 4, for what it is and didn't ask for more"
why wouldn't you do that with the new devil may cry?

Blacktric1796d ago (Edited 1796d ago )

"yep, both those statements were from your comment. you can't critisize a game for everything...make up your mind"

If the things that I'm criticizing are actual shortcomings that contradicts what developer has claimed for more than year, I actually can.

"If you played Devil May Cry 4, for what it is and didn't ask for more"
"why wouldn't you do that with the new devil may cry?"

Why would I play it for what "it turned out to be" when I was promised more and ridiculed, after not getting this premise fulfilled, by the director himself? When Tameem and Capcom representitives themselves proudly said they were going for a reboot that preserves what Devil May Cry stood for while giving it a better story with a serious twist?

The story premise itself is laughable at best since; They Live, Matrix and many other movies already did it with far better characterization and overall direction. DmC has none of that. The characters are laughably written, Donte's (the protagonist himself) arc is comprised of him getting his hair whiter as the story progresses and the ending is just a simple cash-in setup for a sequel and it provides no closure whatsoever.

In Devil May Cry games (specifically 1-3-4), the story was there as an excuse for gameplay. Not the other way around. And neither the developers nor the game itself dictated otherwise. You had your protagonist with a minimal arc who never took himself seriously and even went great lengths to make fun of himself. Over the top supporting characters that were fitting for an over the top setting and action packed, fluid gameplay... That was it. They didn't promise; "this game will have a story that will melt your brain because of all the symbolism and social commentary with deep characterization", while DmC was promised to be a game like that.

Thank you for the advice. Your words, so full of wisdom, have cast the scales from mine eyes and revealed a new world of hope and humanity. This guy is good!

If u gonna change the game, then change the name. Simple stuff.

WolfLeBlack1796d ago

Yeah, but it would probably have just been accused of being a DMC copycat, then.

UnSelf1796d ago

Yea by rabid fanboys who were never gonna buy it in the first place. But a good game is a good game period. And a copycat of what? This game doesn't play like the original dmc, it's different enough to had held its own as a stand alone new IP wit new characters.

Bayonetta in a sense is technically dmc wit a female protag and look how well that was received

zerocrossing1796d ago

Capcom and NT are just riding the coat tails of the past success from the original franchise, and leaving shitty skidmarks all over it...

grailly1796d ago

I see where your coming from, but overlooking the title isn't all that hard either.

and as you say below: a good game is a good game. So who really cares about the title.

-All the haters knew it was going to be a great game after all the hands on and preview-praise it was receiving that's why all WE lovers never got down or missed a beat to their ceaseless drive-by trolling in the Waaahmbulance! ^_^

oriononer1796d ago (Edited 1796d ago )

Holy moly! If that is a picture of you, then you should play the reboot Dante in the inevitable movie adaptation. I'll leave figuring out if that's a compliment to you.

Allsystemgamer1796d ago

That's the wrong attitude there. They had legitimate complaints.

It doesn't feel like dmc
The characters are completely different from the past titles
Gameplay mechanics are simplified and mainstreamed.
It's not 60fps
Dante's over all change is terrible
The devs slandered against the people that brought the DMC name up in the first place

Etc

Imagine if 343 did a halo reboot where master cheif was an over talkative grunt that smoked and never wore a helmet. It's changing an icon that was Not necessary.

Dmc sold to dmc fans. Who's goin to buy this one? Not dmc fans that's for sure.

I'm not a dmc fan but they're enjoyable and I have no interest in this one based on the reaction the real fans gave. I do not support money grab reboots.

A reboot is only necessary when a franchise has begun to fail as an attempt to reinvigorate the name. This reboot was not necessary.

SovereignSnaKe1795d ago (Edited 1795d ago )

@oriononer -Why thank you, yes it is, I decided to be Dante for Halloween in lieu of all the controversy this past October and test out how crabby people actually were about the young Dante. Of course everyone thought I was doing FF and one person even asked Silent Hill?.. Really?.. ^_^ -But after a brief explanation most people were fine, in fact pretty much everyone hadn't even touched the series since DMC:3!! 0_0

Hozi1796d ago

If I was a betting man, I'm sure I could make a lot of money on this game. I say all those haters are still gonna go out and get this game when they see everyone else having fun with it. Heck, even if it's total shit you haters would still play the game just so you can criticize it. Get a life Haters!!!

Flipgeneral1796d ago

I'll take that bet!!

Too many other good titles being released in Q1.

I'm probably going to grab this at $40. Shouldn't take more than two months for the price to drop
