Why Movies? Games Would Make Better TV Series

Every month it seems, there’s articles and rumors popping up of Game X becoming a feature film. A studio wants to take a game, most of which take dozens of hours to complete, and water down the story and content to make 2 hour Hollywood feature film.

Halo, Metroid, Uncharted, BioShock, God of War, Assassin’s Creed, etc. are just a few of the most well known gaming franchises that Hollywood has shown interest turning into films, all of which have been canned, are still up in the air or are urban myths that are mentioned in interviews.

This is simply the wrong way to go. Why butcher these franchises into films that have to meet a time requirement of 2, maybe 3 hours? Not only will you piss off the fans of the series, it’s just a crappy way to represent what could easily (and more suitably) translate into not a film, but a television series. (E3, Halo, Industry)

That is a good point, they would most certainly make a better TV series in most cases than a movie. Provided they had a good budget... A lot of games are very "visually" appealing, and that means you need money to make that come to life on screen. Assuming the budget is right though, it could very well turn out that games could translate extremely well into a TV series.

Bioshock is the best example.

Edit: It's a prime example. Probably why a promotional image of the show was used...

true, heck ive always said that sly would make a great cartoon, or the prince of perisa could have an awesome series in which each season deals with a different prince in a different setting.

Agreed. A cartoon series or an animated movie at least. In fact Sly, Ratchet and Jak are long overdue for their own cartoons.I am sure they have more then enough personality to make it work.

The only problem that I can think of is budget.

They don't cram multiple book into one movie so why should they do that to games?

I agree. It would me more awesome to make them TV shows, since the stories are usually pretty long to get everything efficiently covered in a movie.

But games are at their best, as games.

Fact is, movies have a much larger audience and potentially have a greater profit margin if done right.

The vast majority of the tv watching public are not gamers.

They also don't read comics, yet look at walking dead.
optimus  +   959d ago
The walking dead is a bad example because it didn't start out as a game...fact of the matter is this, people watch less tv today than they did 10 yrs ago...people are getting their entertainment online now with little to no commercials...for a studio to turn a game into a tv show it would need to do it justice in some way and quite frankly the budget would be too much...it's the reason why we have so many reality shows today...

IceCold compared babylon 5 to mass effect but babylon 5 lasted about 3 seasons and was cancelled years before mass effect came along (maybe mass effect got some ideas from babylon 5)....

Take mortal kombat for instance the 1st movie had one of the biggest opening for a video game movie in history and is one of the highest if not the highest grossing videogame movie to date...they later turned it into a tv show and it got cancelled after 2 seasons (i think)...
then they did mortal kombat legacy for the web and it generated millions of views week after week more than it probably would have on tv had it gone to some cable channel like sci-fi or spike tv where their most popular shows pull just 3 million views if they're lucky...

I would rather see a big budget movie than a half assed tv show based on a videogame...animation you might have more freedom but still wouldn't generate enough viewing to keep it on the air...not that i wouldn't keep my fingers crossed for it.
