Piracy is a controversial topic that often leads to heated debates over how much it really impacts profits and game revenues, with some saying it is killing the games industry and others saying that it might even have positive benefits. But a new interview has highlighted another problem – how the mere notion of it can put off publishers from creating new games. Daily Reaction discusses.

Could piracy really ruin the 3DS’s future? What is the full scope of consequences? And if it is dangerous, what can we — gamers, developers, and publishers — do to prevent it?
The original DS was plagued with piracy. Flash carts could be purchased for under $10. The problem was so bad that pirates were even selling flash carts full of games on Craig's list.
There was also a problem with pirate carts and multi carts.
And even with all that the DS is the highest selling portable of all time, the second highest selling gaming device, and it has more million selling titles than any gaming device in history, yes, even more than the PS2.
So tell me again how piracy is going to doom the 3DS.
I bought games on the DS and hacked it, because I hated carrying around 30 game cards. But now I just buy all my 3DS games digitally. Pirating: Do Not Want.
People will go to extraordinary lengths and justifications to avoid having to pay for something.
"Other gaming mascots better watch out, because the release of The Power of Illusion will mean Mickey's third major game appearance for the year 2012 -- other two being Kingdom Hearts 3D and Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two. Serving as a handheld spiritual successor to Castle of Illusion and what appears to be a close relative to DuckTales, The Power of Illusion promises to be a strong experience all on its own without relying heavily on Disney Epic Mickey's anticipated sequel to give it momentum." -- Wiiloveit.com
I think the internet offers enough free stuff, that anyone who tries to justify piracy is an idiot.
I hate the argument "Oh games shouldn't be $60, it's unfair". Then wait, they get cheaper.
I never really thought of that. It's true though, we see it a lot on handhelds especially, what with the PSP and DS having been involved with a lot of pirated software. Sad =/
Most of the people that pirate games they cant buy a 60$ game so isnt sale lost cause if the game couldnt be pirate that guy will never buy that game anyway.
Piracy made Publishers slash prices and lower prices have made games sales go up thus increasing revenue and game exposure in the long run!
I don't condone Piracy but it has it's Pro's and Con's.
