New PlayStation Move Design Discovered In Latest Sony Patent
A recent patent filed by the conglomerate reveals a sharp new design for the peripheral that could provide gamers with a better handle on the Move wands.
(Playstation Move, PS3)
Technically the orb could be as small as a pinhead and still work, although dpi of the camera may require something bigger.
In order to determine the distance the ball moves towards the camera, it calculates the size of the ball in relation to the camera...if it's bigger it's closer. It then calculates the difference in size to determine how far it's moved. Using the time it takes to move between those two points gives you the displacement variable associated with motion. It also calculates rotation and other fun mathematical stuff.
However they have to take into account the size of the handle itself, and make sure that the ball doesn't ever get obscured. Something that could happen if say you turn the controller sideways and the handle hides the actual globe.
Ok apparently Im getting some disagrees here, so allow me to elaborate a little.
Motion sensor gaming since being implemented by Sonys Move and MS Kinect hasn't really made many waves in the industry, Im not saying motion sensor gaming is a dead end gimmick but its pretty evident that no games or franchises from either company has really given us much of an excuse to think it's the way forward for how we play games and heck even Nintendo who pioneered motion sensor gaming is moving past it into tablet territory, the controller is still very much king.
The reason why they haven't made a impact is ,some dev do not know how to use either tech, move tech is established but not to many care to us it,kinect tech is not mature enough to be implemented in any game where it makes sense other than casual stuff.
I can't help but always do a Facepalm when I read things like this. Without trying to be rude I just think that saying something like that is silly really. The whole point of motion this gen was almost like the start of a looooong term project. It's highly unlikely anyone will come up with the "perfect motion gaming solution" any time soon but in the mean time we can strive to find ways to make this tech work and in great ways. We can only do this through learning and experimentation.
It's like North Korea with their rocket launches LOL...It make take failure and error but we can take that failure or that experience from learning and eventually someday we will find new ways to reach success.
Nobody ever succeeds when they believe they truly will fail or that everyone that says "Dead On Arrival! or "you will always fail!".
That's just my take on it, progress for the sake of progress, I'm glad Microsoft at least went out on a limb to try and make pure motion work, and that Sony tried to perfect the motion controller.
So you're happy paying full retail price for prototype tech that's barely gotten any support this gen?
Like I said motion sensor gaming isn't a dead end, it may well add something useful eventually but let the R&D do the testing.
In reality the move and Kinect are just cashing in on the Wii's success, the Move isn't improving on the Wii-mote and the Kinect hasn't added anything interesting to the harcore demographic except maybe voice commands.
Yeah, they have some mildly entertaining gimmicks and interesting party games, but they aren't justifying their existence, I don't feel the defence that they are "experimental" holds much weight, motion sensor gaming currently offers little to the medium but fleeting novelty and it damages the experience in certain circumstances.
I am a Everything Sony Playstation fan but Sony doesn't get it, The move was not successful. Just Stop! I don't understand why they never really utilized the motion controls in the six axis. Give it up just like 3D gaming! Please!

do you even have a 3dtv? 3d is a whole new experience while you play the game everything look cool and more beautiful and immersive..
Move is more like a gimmick but some people like it and it helps Sony to win some market shear(casuals) and cash in some extra $ Sony should stop forcing it on hardcore games and focus it on casual only games, thats their mistake with it so far.
next gen you will see 3d how was meant to be with the new 4k tvs and it will become somehow irrelevant by 2020 once the 8k tvs comes out sine the quality is so good that it looks like 3d already .
Lol i can give you 100 article that say PS3 is death and your point is?
4k tvs I believe they all have 3d (Sony ones, toshiba, lg does) and most 1080p have 3d, how is that death? many games and movies are in 3d today (most konami, sony games do) it's just not boost any more because its out there already and they don't need to hype it any more.. so how is 3d death?
3d will become irrelevant one 8k the new toy to have, by 2020 8k will be relevant and make 3d irrelevant, sine the picture quality like been there alive coming out of the tv.
The biggest problem with move was the awful camera. They put a lens on a potato and just basically threw the tech away. If it included a higher resolution camera it could be a different story. It looks like a webcam from the late 90's early 2000 with the garbage ass resolution.
The tracking is fine and only assume it will be better with a higher quality camera. If they wanted to make a worthwhile change to the move controller add a small analog stick similar to the vita to allow two hand use of wands instead of the nunchuck.
Game like res evil you have one hand with the flashlight the other holding a gun while you can use both items AND move thru the level. Gets rid of the on rail titles and allows more freedom with others.
Okay, motion control was a cute little experiment and lives on in silly dance games. Can we move on now and get back to making good games controlled with a gamepad?
I hope this will stay as just patents and not get implemented in a product.
I wish Sony would realize that the Move controller was just a gimmick to fight Microsofts Kinect. Move is practically dead right now and i just don't see a way it could sell a second time around (in the next gen), no matter how precise it is.
I bet Microsofts next gen motion system will be a combination of Kinect and Move. A full body sensing Kinect with optional controller for more "hard core" games.
And Sony should work in the same direction if they wish to stay competitive in the motion sensing part of the console business.
In order to determine the distance the ball moves towards the camera, it calculates the size of the ball in relation to the camera...if it's bigger it's closer. Not new at all.

This is NOT news. If anyone disagrees then I'd suggest they have some kind of problem and should seek help
Oh, and I'm not buying Move all over again... Sony just needs to make the Move we have now work with the PS4.
EDIT: I guess I have nothing to worry about since koehler83 took the time to Google it. :D

how does it track rotation if it's color is uniform and the ball is completely round and have no marks?
