There's the potential for a great competitive puzzler here, but the missing features, along with the iffy odds of actually connecting to an online game without something getting mucked up, make Magical Drop 5 impossible to recommend. If you're patient, I think odds are good that you'll be rewarded, but it's downright shameful that a fundamentally good product was released in such a shoddy state."

Magical Drop V is the latest in a sprawling line of me-too puzzlers that have jumped on the bandwagon over the years. Strangely enough, it's an actual attempt at revival that seems to have come out of nowhere. Magical Drop made quite the splash back in the 90s with its debut on the Neo Geo, and for the better part of that decade made a name for itself as one of the greatest puzzle games you could get your hands on.
Magical Drop is a series of puzzle games started by the now-defunct Data East, the developer behind various arcade games around that time—Captain America and the Avengers, Side Pocket—and perhaps more famous known nowadays for Bad Dudes. The story of the Magical Drop series—if it counts as a story—involves various characters representing the Major Tarot Arcanas challenging each other in puzzle matches. The premise in V specifically states that they’re fighting in a tournament that would grant a wish to the winner, but it wasn’t particularly obvious in the scenes in between, short as they are.
