Techland Time: Ni No Kuni, The Most Promising Japanese Roleplaying Game in Years

Matt Peckham of Techland Time writes:

You’ve probably never heard of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. Let’s change that. What’s a “Ni no Kuni” anyway? There’s a “white witch” in the game? Someone made an RPG from Narnia fan fiction?

One thing at a time. Maybe you’ve heard of Studio Ghibli, the Tokyo-based film house behind animated movies like Howl’s Moving Castle, Grave of the Fireflies and Spirited Away — a handful from the studio’s A-list, and some of the finest films ever made.

Well, the Studio Ghibli folks got together with Japanese game developer Level 5 (Dark Cloud 2, Dragon’s Quest VIII, the Professor Layton series — some of the finest games ever made) a few years ago to make a roleplaying game. (Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, PS3)

I dunno, Tales of Graces f was absolutely amazing. I considered that the best JRPG since FFX.
j-blaze  +   999d ago
then you missed a lot of quality JRPGs like Lost Odyssey, Resonance of Fate, Xenoblade, Last Story, Infinite Space, Devil Survivor 1 and 2...etc

you would say JRPGs are rare or dead ONLY if you have one system called ps3 and that's why Ni No Kuni getting all the praise, personally i don't like the game, the characters design and story look too childish

Xenoblade was...overrated, as far as I could tell(bout 20 hours of it). Mmo gameplay isn't a good thing for single player/. Got too boring.

Now, as for the childish look of Ni no Kuni. Suit yourself, I have the same problem. However I know it's my problem and won't actually matter once I play the game. The story is not childish at all either. Just the character design.

Edit- NoKingofWiiu.....it's overrated. The gameplay is pretty average, it has a great story(albeit very melodramatic) great music and yeah that's it. The gameplay is a bit boring. It's an Mmo with no other people and Less control over your party. That's all their is to the gameplay. Unfortunately the big beautiful open maps are only their for battling and getting loot/items.

There is no purpose for it other than that, no side quests(unless speaking of side quest battles). Basically, the gameplay is standard Mmo like Star wars Tor or world of warcraft and nothing more. Mmo's get away with it because it's about interacting with hundreds of people.

Wow! Just wow. You think that Ni no Kuni is only getting praise because it's only on PS3... a comment that can only come from someone who doesn't have a PS3 nor knows anything about the game to understand where the praise is coming from. This is the same ignorance that pours from your facets each time you post. I bet if Ni no Kuni was only on 360 or Wii, your post would be very different indeed.

The game is receiving praise from all over, even your Japanese peers and those that don't even have a PS3. Ghibli fans, Level-5 fans, heck - even RPG fans.

And "looks too childish"? Exactly... "looks". That is YOUR stupid problem for taking things at face value. Pixar films "look" childish, but they are fantastic and if you actually watch them you can observe and pick apart the mature themes amongst the childlike exterior. Adults enjoy Pixar prodcutions just like Ghibli productions.

Ni no Kuni's story is a mature - yet childlike - tale of loss, fantasy and adventure. Something suitable for all ages. Dig deeper and you will find the best JRPG in years.

Your comment is pretty childish. "WAH! You didn't play the games I played wahhhh my games are much better wahhh, it looks childish wahhhhh" someone give him a tissue
Blastoise  +   999d ago

I agree. I played Xenoblade Chronicles for about the same time you did (maybe a bit more) and it was a good game. But it's not great. All this best JRPG of the generation talk confuses me. Demon's Souls currently holds that title to me.

@j-blaze. You only don't like it because its on Playstation 3, and that's a fact. If this was on Xbox 360, or an upcoming Wii U game, you'd be singing it's praises.

Xenoblade and Resonance of Fate are good. I love the devil survivor series. Don't forget Persona. Tales of Graces F is also very good. Ni No Kuni looks amazing and its art and story are by GHIBLI so you can stop with the too childish bullshit. There are way more quality JRPGS on PS3 than what you think. There is Tales of Vesperia, Graces, Xillia 1 and 2, WKC 1 and 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea 3 and 4, Ar Tonelico 3, etc.

Snookie said tales of graces is the best jrpg.

U accused him that's becuz its a ps3 exclusive.

But... tales of graces is not a ps3 exclusive ..... so what the hell is wrong w u? o_O;

He even implied that its better than the ps3 exclusive ni no kuni ...

Very real, that game did a wonderful job of creating likable characters and the dialogue/interactions they had with one another (especially in side scenes) were fantastic. Although, I should reiterate my above statement. I meant to say "best JRPG on consoles since FFX". Not really trying to compare it to FFX, as it doesn't stand up to that. Still, it was a fantastic game.

Xenoblade Chronicles 100%. Ofcourse Sony fans will dispute that. I've not played Ni no Kuni yet So I can't compare , But Xenoblade is the best RPG i've played this gen better than all of the WRPG's.

It's not overated at all. Once you deal with the dated graphics it's one of the best RPG's ever made.

I'm currently finishing up Lost Odyssey and I just finished Tales of Graces f yesterday (I was playing them both since Christmas) and I have to say Tales is better.

I wasn't a fan of it's battle system at first and the story seemed very childish at first but it got much better in both respects. Lost Odyssey whilst great, just isn't as good in my opinion.

Graces was Mediocre at best IMO. Jblaze noted some outstanding jrpgs. I agree graces is the best on the ps3 but that's not saying much. Still any Tales game localized is a good thing and Ni No Kuni looks fantastic. I prefer more epic games like FF, Lost Odyssey, Xenoblade myself but I love Ghibli to death and Level 5 has the potential to make great games. I totally hated WKC though. Hopefully this is better than that was.

Lost Odyssey was the best jrpg for me. Had a long, epic quest with massive towns, hidden dungeons, bosses, great characters, awesome story, 20 some hours of cgi cutscenes (love cutscenes), and the best damn soundtrack since FFX's. Jansen was the shit I might add.
Snookies12  +   999d ago
It's okay if you didn't care for it, I won't judge on your opinion or anything. It's just that you said you prefer more "epic" games. Which is exactly what I prefer, and Graces certainly qualified for that nearing the end. (Not sure if you got that far or not, the game does take a bit of time to start gaining steam though.)

Damn, people have short memories. Xenoblade Chronicles and ToGf were both excellent, and they were only released last year. Ni No Kuni looks great, but I doubt it's MUCH better than the aforementioned.

Not bashing Ni No Kuni; but every time a great JRPG comes out, the reviewers all gush, saying "It's the best JRPG in years! It breathes new life and hope into the genre!" Then one month later they're back in doom and gloom mode, saying "Are JRPGs dying? There hasn't been a good one in years!" I expect the same to happen here.

To emphasize this point, no GOTY or anything of the year nominations were given to Xenoblade, despite rave reviews and many "GOTY contender" comments from reviewers and fans alike.

A lot of those games I forgot about while waiting for them to be localized. By the time they release I am usually so pissed off that I don't want to buy them at full price anymore. I wanted to beat Reggie bloody with my wii after hearing about Xenoblade being released in EU and not NA. Region free consoles and games is the way to go if they're going to do crap like that.
TongkatAli  +   999d ago
I swear nobody can praise anything nowadays. It's all about "I have it better then you hahaha" : | Really ?

Xenoblade was for me the best JRPG I have play for 2012 & the best of this generation till now, but this generation is not over yet & Ni No Kuni although came at the end of this generation it looks like it will be a very strong contender for the title of best JRPG of this generation, we will learn very soon we r just few days away :)

Its a shame that im not a fan of this genre..
I hope it will sell very well, because it looks gorgeous

Game journalists have such short memory spans. Xenoblade Chronicles came out not even a year ago as did Tales of Grace F, and both are already looked over...

I'm not even a JRPG fan but I'm buying the hell outta this game.

Time to speak with our wallets again and let the publishers know we want more well crafted jrpgs.

They clearly put a ton of time and effort into this beautiful and grand-scale game and I hope gamers reward them for it. Looks like so much fun!

I love JRPG's definitely buying this game when I'm on a God willing 3 month vacation this summer so I can put alot of time into this game,it reminds me of the JRPG's of the SN & PS1 era but with better graphics.
