The transition to 3D wasn't nearly as smooth as some remember. Here's a look at how 2D gaming is still great and why you should care.
I know I'm the minority, but I actually HATED the PS1/N64 era. My favorite console from that time was the Saturn because it still had a ton of 2D games. It's not that I hated 3d. I had been 3d gaming on the PC for several years already. What I hated was how 3d got shoehorned into every franchise, whether or not it needed it. Super Mario 64? Awesome game, but what happened to my 2D Mario? Earthworm Jim 3D? LOL. 3D fighting games? I want my sprites! Again, I know I'm in the minority but I'm glad the indie scene has been bringing back 2d-style games.
And you're point exactly? 2D is all but dead now. It only happens rarely in instances like Braid. Otherwise even with 2D games they're built with 3D game engines which have left over assets. When I found out that 2D sprites for PS3/360 games would be an expensive exception versus the 3D rule I had doubts about this conosle gen.
I like how the comments Uncharted once, and then the two comments start hating on it by doubting the awards it got -_- I understand that not everyone likes every type of genre (one of my PSN friends don't really like 3D games because they give him motion sickness), but Uncharted 2, despite people still saying "it won because of weaker competition", still deserves all the awards it got.
