IllumiRoom: Video Projection Mapping Meets Video Game

E-mpire Writes: As someone who does video projection mapping installations for a living, I was quite excited to hear about IllumiRoom. What sort of possibilities exist? What challenges will a completely automated projection mapping system face? Here are my thoughts based on what I know about projection mapping. (Casual games, Dev, Kinect, Microsoft, Next-Gen, Tech, Xbox, Xbox 360)

Think the concept will be cool in a blank and empty room. In a regular living room I honestly think the whole light affects will be distracting and won't be immersing because of the over lapping in furniture.

I think it is up to the game developers to ensure you don't get confused. I mean it looked pretty darn good in the video.

Would love to see that in my home.

Microsoft wants Xbox to be in every living room and this is what they have shown to be the future, except usually in living rooms are doors, windows (not the os), wallpaper, coffee tables, cabinates, sofa's and chairs, clocks and pictures on the wall, kids running about (if you have a family), maybe pets running around, fire places and or radiators, and in daytime its bright. none of this is good for a projection there is too much clutter. I strugle to see how this will be practical in a modern home, you would need a hospital style clean room with all white walls, no windows or projector screens over them for this to work, I see a lot of people falling for this taking it home and it will absolutely not work then be really disappointed unless you live on your own and convert a room in your house into an Xbox room. it is a good idea just not practical.

I was not going to respond to you post but I took the bait.

What you are describing the typical family living room to be is a clutter mess like my first attached when in fact the typical home is actually not over cluttered like the 2nd attached image.

Did you watch the video? The guys living room had all kinds of stuff around the TV that we all would normally have.

The point is that you should have the lights turned off to fully to experience the effects that Illumiroom will give you.

If you have a millions things in your living or room and 100's og animals running around then maybe you should invest in a storage room instaed of an illumiroom.

Neither of those images are anywhere near to being like the typical living room. A child's bedroom and what looks like some product testing room? Come on now.

The room in the video had shelves and stuff, but they were all CONVENIENTLY flat surfaces. The most challenging items in that room were gigantic picture frames and plants (with big, broad leaves) that were off to the side.

All the IRL gamers that I know are single adult men. Generally they live in barren apartments with their 50" lcd or plasma being a the focal point of their couch. They all smoke lots of pot. They have no living plants or wall hangings in their temple of game. They already game with the lights off.

Every single one of them would go for this.

Its a good idea no doubt but to mount in a realistic family living room would be distracting or any room that doesnt have its on distractions to fully take advantage of this device.
