CVG:Valve is an unmistakable success story but the next chapter in the company's history is fraught with challenges and drawbacks.
Is it really the Steambox though...
I thought this was just the bases of it, not the actual thing. Just a introduction really to these types of PC box. From what I'm reading anyway it makes it sound like that. @Below yet every site keeps calling it the steambox, mass confusion even though they already said it isn't. Still CVG does point that out, so.
I don't see why Gabe dosen't keep saying it untill sites start reporting on it...that is ISN'T the Steambox because at the end of the day the confusion is going to to hurt Valve the most. Just get it straightend out now I say
Apparently he now is. Taken from Toms Hardware article http://www.tomshardware.com... First, the notion that this is the Steam Box is false. Rather, there will be a variety of different Steam Boxes as Valve is working with various partners to develop a variety of different "Steam Boxes." Newell explained that Valve would be working on its own version of the Steam Box, the Linux-based console that we've heard so much about, stating "We’ll come out with our own and we’ll sell it to consumers by ourselves. That’ll be a Linux box, [and] if you want to install Windows you can. We’re not going to make it hard. This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination.
It's a hard sell because PC gamers like to build their own rigs and doubt many console owners care enough
The Steambox isn't meant for PC gamers. It's meant for console gamers intimidated by the idea of PC gaming.
@Kamikaze135 every console needs an exclusives, there´s no point in getting Steambox unless HL3 and Portal 3 won´t be exclusive to the device
well, that would depend on the specs of the Steambox vs the specs of the nextgen machines. I mean a lot of console gamers would be open to the idea of the Steambox since console gamers have been wanting native 1080p/60fps that PC gamers have been enjoying for sometime. However, I don't see a console device easily capable of such a feat without a price tag that is in the $500 area.
well im not intimidated by pc gaming but im not exactly tech savy either so a steam box dedicated for steam games is great for me then i can start using my pc less often then theres my own mini problem with maintenace on pc in general
@Piroh Gabens already gone and said that this isn't meant to isolate pc gamers. If you own a good gaming pc then you don't need a steam box.
This is NOT for PC heads. How hard is it for PC heads to believe that there are MILLIONS of gamers that want to play, mod games on PC but have ZERO desire to be bothered with the crap that comes along with it. I don't care how "easy" building a rig is suppose to be if it's not as simple as plug and play then plenty will not want to be bothered, such as I. It doesn't need halo or uncharted as there are tons of PC games already available for PC ONLY which are in fact, exclusives. As a gamer I'm baffled at how many PC heads want this to fail. How can you consider yourself a gamer if you're not interested in games on ALL platforms. Do you really enjoy gaming or are you using gaming as some type of twisted kick? More and more we are getting these type of "gamers" who are more interested in witholding or restricting games from being played by everyone, what happened?
too early to say anything since we know nothing about SteamBox or the next Xbox/PS
Why are so many retarded "journalists" need to research, the xi3 Pistion is not the steam box its a product that is however being backed by valve.
Wow that first sentence was high on derp it should say. Why are there so many retarded journalists unable to do any research.
upgradeable console not a game changer? What universe am I in?
exactly right? a console that allows you to install windows on top of this nifty bit Newell's plans for the Steam Box's future are ambitious. He plans on having it support more than two screens, running multiple instances of games, stating, "The Steam Box will also be a server. Any PC can serve multiple monitors, so over time, the next-generation (post-Kepler) you can have one GPU that’s serving up eight simultaneous game calls. So you could have one PC and eight televisions and eight controllers and everybody getting great performance out of it. We’re used to having one monitor, or two monitors — now we’re saying let's expand that a little bit."
The first sentence says the Wii and iPhone has disrupted the console market. Wii= 90m Xbox=70+ Ps3=70+ Seems to be the most successful gen of consoles ever..so yeah...a CVG article. As a Pc gamer with multiple rigs and a nice laptop..i dont need an SBox..but whos to say the Steambox wont fill in the void left by the WiiU when it fails to do Wii numbers.
I think its far too early to say what kind of impact the steam box will have. Especially given that Valve hasn't really nailed down what the Steam Box actually will be as in the final product(s). For me so far what I have seen both intrigues me and also seems underwhelming all in the same breath. For each tid bit I learn that makes me say "that seems cool" there is another thing said by valve that makes me scratch my head.
The price is what makes it a non game changer.
