Did Valve and Nvidia Just One-Up the Wii U?

Forvbes - If you’ve been following the news from CES 2013, you’ll know that NVIDIA has announced its Tegra 4 powered, handheld Android-based gaming device, SHIELD. It looks like the PS3/Xbox-style gamepad controller and a Nintendo DS had a baby. And like all infants, it has terrific potential. (NVIDIA, Tech, Valve, Wii U)

Did Valve and Nvidia Just One-Up the Wii U? No! But it is a good idea and shows just how innovative the Wii U really is. I wouldn't be surprised if both MS and Sony have some sort of screen on their respective controllers. If that happens, all the Wii U haters will, all of a sudden have a change of heart and try to embrace this innovation. Either way, it's always good to see new and innovative ways to play games, regardless of what ever console you choose!

Isn't that how it always is?

"Oh the Wii remote sucks, but the Playstation Move is so innovative.."

It will be interesting to see how these projects come along. I do agree that we need more innovation when it comes to how we interact with games. And the Wii U has the potential to offer up some interesting new ways to play. Here's hoping that developers other than Nintendo's first party can utilize the gamepad in creative ways. Ubisoft did a pretty good job with ZombiU, and it should be interesting to see how they progress even further should a sequel surface.

LOL nintendo just led the charge like always.

Wiiu is more about Asymetric gameplay than it is off screen remote play...

The wiiu is a thousand times better than the shield. It's the uggliest thing ever.

Power wise they just crushed Sony and ms at there own game, the power wars. Their controller setup is retarded though.

The thing runs off a chip that is like 700 xboxes duct taped together. Ms and Sony don't have a chance in hell of beating that tech then nvidia made it so any one could use it. So you know nintendo could actually use this tech to beat ms and Sony tech wise and then offer nintendo games on top of it.

''Power wise they just crushed Sony and ms at there own game, the power wars.''
That's what makes this device so interesting. And it's selling at a profit, too!
N4g_null  +   1125d ago
No one but the mobile space is talking about this. This can be made into a service and steam could be ran off this on the wiiu even. Sure MS and sony could use this also but how much is the stand along box going to cost after al that non future proof power is paid for?

Epic asked for 2.5 teraflops and they gave them 200 teraflops woooooooow. Also LGs oled tv looks better than any thing else at the show!

The remote play is silly if it is not in a console form, yet here is a prefect solution to cloud gaming. Their GRID tech is very sweet. Also the tegra 4 is crazy.... This can go into smart tvs even.

PC & Android Invades Home Console and Handheld gaming territory in full force!
Looking at the bigger picture.

The Hardware Age is drawing to a close. Welcome the Operating System Age or the OS Wars were software is king.

All the more companies are blurring the line between console gaming and PC gaming.

1. PC games first invaded home consoles when Microsoft brought the FPS frag heads to consoles via Xbox.

2. Now Valve is doing a 2nd wave invasion of PC gaming to home consoles via Piston.

3. Now Nvidia is bringing both PC Gaming and

4. Android gaming to home console and handheld portable gaming territory via Project Shield.

As they say "There is always a bigger fish."

And Android is that BIGGER fish.
It swallows Nintendo, Sony, Apple, and Microsoft in the gaming arena on a very rapid pace.
Apple and M$ made a huge mistake by making their OS tightly closed.

Android is now the biggest gaming platform in the world with 500 million devices activated in total since 2008 and 1.3 million activations per day. Samsung alone forecasts 510 million Android devices this year and along with it Android Games which can be played using home console-grade controllers.

Heh, even Google Android is getting bigger and bigger than Microsoft Windows by the second. (the Revenge of Linux Kernel)

Android will be the most accessible gaming OS in the world on any screen be it television, smartphones, tablets, home and handheld gaming consoles, etc.

The Universal Gaming Standard can only be an open source platform like Android.

ooops....*310 million Samsung Android devices for 2013 ...my bad

Console video gaming is a niche market compared to smartphones and PCs but I am glad Android has integrated it to main stream consumer electronics... which is good for video games.

Wasted opportunity for Sony PS Vita not using Android.

Android will come very strong to video games the same way it destroyed Apple in the smartphone arena. Even small upstarting software & hardware companies will have equal opportunities in carving their own success in video gaming via Android.

Did Valve and NVidia just one-up the Wii U?

Not exactly. The NVidia reps admitted that this is for niche market, and the fact that they didn't reveal any price would mean it will be something that's not on the cheap side.

Also, like the PS3+Vita connectivity issue, the PC streaming capability means you'll need another PC/Laptop that has at least an NVidia 6+ series for it to work.

But like I said, "not exactly", and what I mean is that yes, in a way, it will affect the Wii U considering that it runs on Android and uses the Tegra 4 technology, it's portable, and it can stream games from PC.

What? Wii U? But this is remote play... That's been around since the original PSP. Now it's just streaming from your computer instead of your PS3.
metroid32  +   1125d ago
Its about fully comiting like Nintendo which makes them first mate.
wiiulee  +   1125d ago
of course not...nintendo is innovation...but all the rest will copy the wiiu and try to bring their own twist...haters will hate

Truly awful sensationalist garbage with no basis in reality.

A pathetically obvious trolling for hits article. Anyone who spends time discussing or arguing about this awful piece is a sucker who is easily trolled.

that thing looks like an april fools joke
