3 Things Square-Enix Can Do To Save Final Fantasy

WC writes: Final Fantasy has fallen upon hard times. Square-Enix’s juggernaut RPG series has, by most accounts, taken some serious missteps and is in desperate need of a White Mage to save it from the brink of death with a quick cast of Curaga. Final Fantasy XIII was quite possibly the most disappointing entry into the series yet and is dogged by uneven pacing and a combat system that looks pretty neat but practically plays itself. Many saw Final Fantasy XIII-2 as an improvement over XIII, but instead of leaving well enough alone, Square is going forward with another sequel Lightning Returns.

In the MMO world, Final Fantasy XIV was an unmitigated disaster upon release which forced Square to kill the game, throw a Phoenix Down and try again. Despite their recent misadventures, I think there are ample opportunities for Square to turn this whole thing around and make us fall in love with their key franchise again. Let’s start with something they may already be doing. (Final Fantasy, PS3, Xbox 360)

The author definitely had the right idea. Remakes of games would be sweet, especially of VI, VII and X.

Three things they need to do:
1) Return to an open world/over world:
Doesn't have to be an "open" world, but give player exploration room. Vehicles making a comeback would be nice too.

2) Return to class based characters:
Less Waka with his dogeball of dragon slaying or Vanille with whatever the hell she had - a dream catcher? - and more Monk Tifa and someone with a skill set based on an Onion Knight.

3) Use cutscenes as the basis and benchmark for gameplay. Not just something spectacular players watch.

Would also add 4) Enough with the cash-in remakes. Even if they bring cash.
lol at dream catcher!

I seriously don't know what the crap that thing was either.

#1 was a little dumb, but I definitely agree with #3. In my opinion, the JRPG will always work best with sprites and text boxes; that's where the form shines, and Square has the resources to make some REALLY PRETTY sprites.

1. Make the main series sony exclusive again.
2. Stop trying to westernize the games.
3. Make exploration a priorty again.

I agree. It appears Square truly shines when they only focus on one console for their main series. Optimization is key when making such a big game like this. They can minimize bugs this way and just code one game.

But alas, game developing costs are rising and SE believes multiplatform is the solution. Maybe it is, but look at what happened to FFXIII. Though SE will never admit to it, making it multiplat delayed the game and cut the content.

HD Remakes of the classic FF games but keeping the battle style and everything that we loved.

1.make it a Playstation Exclusive.

All the once great franchises went downhill once they went multiplatform FF,Devil may cry, crash bandicoot, spyro, resident evil etc......

I know what they can do:

1 Make the game hard
2 Let us control ALL characters
3 A battle system like lost odyssey or ffx would be great
4 A great story
5 Fantastic Music
6 Great CGI Movies
7 Grinding

You know what final fantasy used to have....
