Final Fantasy VII: Is it Overrated?

While Final Fantasy has published a good number of titles with rather high critic scores and excellent reviews, none have been able to outmatch Final Fantasy VII. But the question is: does Final Fantasy VII really deserve such praise? Should it still remain the number one Final Fantasy title, even after Final Fantasy X and XIII were released? There’s fanboys and girls out there who are dedicated to Final Fantasy VII, who claim it as the greatest game ever to be released. Others have nothing but poor reviews to offer the five-star game, saying it was one of the worst RPGs Square ever invented. G.R. Bradley of Rant Gaming thinks neither response is accurate. What does overrated mean anyway? Is it talked about too much? Perhaps. But people have to remember, this game was incredibly successful, came out at just the right time, and introduced JRPG's to millions of people worldwide, greatly helped the sales of an entire console platform, as well as being a damn fine game in it's right. It was a monumental achievement that heavily influenced a lot of peoples lives and their way of experiencing a story within a videogame. Just as Super Mario Brothers was to platformers, this was to RPGs...at least in my eyes. Games have come and gone that do things better, but there's still an immense amount of respect for this title that will most likely never fade.

As it is, Final Fantasy VII happens to be my most favorite game of all time. Is it the best game I've ever played? No, not by a long shot - but it's still my most favorite and one I can continue to play year after year and still find enjoyment, as well as things I never found the last time. Is this due to nostalgia? In a lot of ways, yes... but the personal memories and experiences I had with this game are ones that I'll never forget. The story in this game was without a doubt the most ambitious I'd ever seen at the time. Having grown up playing mostly action games on Commodore 64 and then moving onto the Megadrive, then jumping into this - you can only imagine. It truly changed the way I thought about storytelling in games. It heavily influenced my interest in the gaming medium and contributed largely to why I still play games today. I guess this is the case for a lot people. And while I HAVE played Final Fantasy VI, and acknowledge that in many ways, it's a lot better - it still won't change what Final Fantasy VII did for me.

So if success and popularity = overrated, then yes. It's overrated. But no amount of hate or disregard for this game will ever wash away the memories I have of Final Fantasy VII.

It's not a bad game, but yes indeed, it is overrated. It's not even the best FF.

i just doubt that the current Square can properly remake something from the old. The 3DS remakes not withstanding - but then how long have they been remaking them?

It achieved critical & commercial success and then went on to create an entire pop-cultre phenomenon. It is definitely not "overrated".

It's easy to look back now and be critical, but we can't hold the same perspective that we did in 1997, it's just not possible. Sure, it's definitely not a perfect game, but that's not what makes a game successful. I think it deserves everything it received.
