Was The Walking Dead saved by its story?

VB - I think it’s safe to say that developer Telltale’s The Walking Dead (released in episodes over the last year for Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, PC, and iOS devices) has already embedded its legacy in video game history, and it’s quite apparent that many others would agree. This past November, the Spike Video Game Awards marked the title as Game of the Year.

It’s true. The Walking Dead really was an incredible experience, but why do we all remember it so fondly? I’d be willing to bet that the game’s story gripped players and compelled them to continue from start to finish. The narrative of The Walking Dead was indeed one of the most memorable and engaging stories told through a video game in this generation. It had realistic and relatable characters, it had emotions across the board, and it forced players to ponder their own methods of making decisions.

gameplay-wise, it's just a point-and-click adventure game... and a pretty simple, easy one at that. the story, though... that was pretty good.

game of the year, though? not in my opinion. awesome game regardless.

Yeah it's a good game but there are too many bugs and technical problems (stiff animations, people disappearing?) an so on for it to be game of the year.
I do really like the game but I have only just started watching the Walking Dead season 2 and they seem to have ripped off a fair few things from the TV series.
Like I said though I still like it and I'm glad they're making more.

The entire game revolved around its story. If the story was weak there would be no point in playing a game like that.

Ended up being my 2nd favorite game of 2012.

yep, the controls were so awkward... I don't even know what they were designed for. the "talking" and walking felt way better with a controller, while the searching for clues and "fighting" was better with a mouse.

Crysis was saved by its graphics. Gears of war was saved by its gameplay. Heavy Rain was saved by its story.

It was intended to be about story, so yes I'd say so. Only played episode one and it was amazing. Hopefully my country gets the retail release.

A lot of adventure games are defined by their stories, and point and click adventure games have been around longer than most care to remember, so people need to stop thinking that gameplay in games like The Walking Dead doesn't have a place.

I mean look at a game like Machinarium. the story is minimalist and abstract, but it's a fun quirky little game with point and click gameplay. These new school gamers need to read up on their gaming history because its kind of embarrassing to see people think that this sort of gameplay is a recent trend and watch them complain that you have no control.
