5 Trailblazing Video Games

TSJ writes: Believe it or not, there was a time when so-called experts didn’t think home video game consoles could work long term. They were a fad, strictly product of the time, and would never replace the arcade games and pinball machines as the real moneymakers. But along the way a few games pushed the boundaries for gamers while making money for investors, paving the way for the colossus of an industry we all enjoy today. (Goldeneye 007, Grand Theft Auto III, PS2, Retro, Super Mario Bros.)

It's a bit strange to see Goldeneye and GTA III up there with Pong. But I guess that's what you get when you only chose 5. You might as well throw in the Legend of Zelda and Street Fighter II.

I can kinda see where they were going with it, but I think they missed out some of the more important reasons why Goldeneye and GTA III were trailblazers.

Like Goldeneye being so good at what it did, it managed to become the 1st console shooter to reach the same level of critical acclaim as PC shooters at the time, and GTA III nailing so well the sand box genre in 3D that so many games have been building off of ever since.

Combat was the fist game that caused video game rivalries in my neighborhood.
